Yesterday I received the good news that my son will be able to have another apprenticeship at our watch manufactory. He just got through his tests and is a metalworker by profession now but the work is very hard to the body. Hauling around heavy fireproof steeldoors and railings isn´t something he want´s to do for the rest of his life. This was when my boss (and friend) suggested he might have another apprenticeship as a watchmaker at our manufactory. Right now he is doing an intership and he likes the job very much. So this August he will start and might even cut short the apprenticeship from 3.5 to 2.5 years because he has already a full training for a profession under his belt. And I even get to seem him more often than before which is very nice too! I am very happy that he has got this chance to "turn around the ship" and learn a job that is so more easy on the body and his health!

Watchmakers have a lot of job opportunities. Even the big opto-electronics companies have their head hunters lingering around our watchmakers school here. After all you can do this job until old age. Nothing to become rich by but money shouldn´t decide what you do for a living anyway...

That's a beauty of a watch. I know if you have to ask you can't afford it but what do the watches your company makes cost?

Fantastic news, Frank. The world needs young watchmakers as the older generation leaves the trade. Good luck to him.

That is great news indeed, them labor intensive occupations have a way of revisiting you as you age.... I for one am glad that I didn't spend too many years hauling swinging beef. That was backbreaking work.

Thank you so much guys! It is fun coming to work every day and seeing that my son is already there. @sammy: Our watches start at Euro 3.980,-- (incl. 19% VAT) which sounds like a lot but if you consider that they are handbuilt on order in Germany it is not that much any more. Take a look here: hentschel-hamburg.de/en/Currently I am in the process of translating the page. There are still a few that are only in German but that will change.

Out of my league, but like a lot of fine things, I still enjoy looking at the craftsmanship.

Google translate popped up for me...no problem reading the webpage. Nice looking pieces!.....I am closer to Larry the cable guy than I am James Bond on caring for watches....Casio G-shock are about my speed.

Although working with luxury watches I am no watch snob. Believe it or not - right now there is a G-Shock on my wrist!

You´re damn right Charlie and that makes me very proud! One day he will know more about watches than his father. BTW, today we had an very friendly American couple in the manufactory. A friend told him "when you come to Hamburg you MUST visit Hentschel"! As it seems we are world-famous by now!
