By now most of you are probably already rolling your eyes, if you're reading this at all. Most here know that I have what could probably best be described as an obsession with Bulldog pipes. More specifically, Bent Bulldogs. The bigger the bend the better. As I'd mentioned in a previous post, I recently had the good fortune of touring the Dr. Grabow Factory in Sparta NC. I won't bore you here with the details (I've already posted quite heavily on this ) but one of the things I thought I'd share was my acquisition of a unique little smoker. We were on our way out of the factory when Rick, the GM / Plant Manager, asked if we'd like to see the "Smoking Machine" that was used to "Pre-Smoke" all of the pipes for all of those years. Obviously we all said "Hell yeah!" After we'd all seen it and got a good chuckle, one of the group noticed a dozen of so boxes full of dust covered CDL pipes. They asked Rick if any of these were for sale. He said "Sure, I guess, if you really think you want one". We all started digging in. I had picked out a couple when Sean, one of the group, walked up to me and handed me, are you ready for this? A Bulldog CDL ! He, and everyone in Sparta by this time, knew that I had an unhealthy obsession with anything remotely resembling a bulldog shaped pipe. Here she is... Started breaking her in this evening with a couple of bowls of Carter Hall...

Looks like it would smoke Carter Hall like a champ.

That is an interesting looking piece. Very cool in my opinion. Happy smoke rings with it.

I am a sucker for Bulldogs too and I think there is no shape that exudes mor "englishness" than the Bulldog.

All my bulldogs are great smokers also...and they just "hang right" in the jaw.
Keep your eye out for GBD bulldogs and rhodesians, I think that British manufacturer really sets the tone for that shape, and some nice specimens can be had for reasonable prices...don't overlook older Comoy's either.

I'm a big fan of bulldogs, and have a few. Always thought they were a classy design.

I found my NOS CDL to be a better smoker than I could've ever imagined. Too bad it was released as pipe smoking started to fade: I bet it would have sold much better in the groovy sixties. Congrats on getting a unique momento from a special visit.
