Many of you may not have known Ed James, he posted in another pipe forum, was a gentle retired soul, Dr Grabow expert, pipe and tamper carver. He generous gave his expertise to anyone who asked. He was very fond of Mullberry to make pipes, I was too. I remember I told him about the Huge Old Mullberry tree my Grandmother despised because the birds would eat the berries and poop on her washing hung on the line, before the days of a Dryer. He made me 2 Mullberry pipes, then a Strawberry and finally a Srawberry Author Briar. He was a gentle man, but an inner core of steel, Navy Vet, retired power Engineer. He left the forum a little while back, COPD was the reason he gave, he was 66. A couple of Days ago we got the news of his passing, but the news kept getting more and more horrible, his Grandson killed him and set his house on fire. I have no words for that. As pipe smokers I thought you should know about Ed, not the final chapter, but the good man he was, if it's possible to love a man I loved Ed, he was something else.

I'm lost for words here, Brad. I read the original post and expressed my condolences but didn't go back to read the follow-up news. Such a senseless act and the pain for Ed's family I unimaginable.

This is terrible news and I can't even imagine someone like Ed being in this scenario. My sincerest condolences to you, Brad, and to all of his friends and family.

Thanks Brad for the loving tribute to Ed. I knew of him on the forum you speak of and admired his craftsmanship from afar. I did not have the pleasure of knowing the man, but can see he was a kind soul from all the friends he had. I went back and read most of his posts and perused his website. The man could sure make fine pipes and tampers and was a wealth of knowledge about Grabows. We lost a good one. Sorry for his loss, Brad.

Having recently joined the Dr. Grabow Collectors forum I had the good fortune of having a few brief interactions with Ed.
His work was beautiful.
His genuine interest and caring for others was even more so.
Such a tragedy.

There was a really nice write up about Ed in the August issue of the NASPC magazine...a pretty righteous tribute.
