I realize I am in the minority, but I don't like bamboo, and this looks like it was added and not originally part of the pipe, so I'm going to have hubby take it off and fit some other kind of wood in it. What I want to know is, what kind of adhesive should he use to glue it into the shank?

I wouldn't glue anything to the shank, maybe make a wood or nylon, or acrylic bushing, making it easier to clean. A white Nylon bushing would look nice.

Maggie from the pic it looks like the stem should be an army mount that was converted to a different style. You may have to find a stem.that will work.

I don't really care for it on pipes either ... you're not alone!

I don't especially like bamboo shanks either or the making of a pipe with one, just a real PITA. But, the pipe your showing as you know does not take the stem pictured and is why someone obviously did that. The stem it suppose to take is like a Peterson "P" lip type, like below which has a much bigger tenon. I would suggest to replace it with the same, either long or shorter will work. Your Pipe is a WDC- William Demuth Co. "Wellington". I do have a few of these stems but, not the "Churchwarden" as pictured. And of course it may very well need to be fitted and of course sanded and polished for Ebonite stems do not come finished in any way or manner.

*sigh* it would probably be best to put the proper stem on it, but I have no interest in it fitted out that way. Anyone interested in the stummel? Free to good home. I do want to keep the stem and play around with it at some point.

Maggie if you were to look at Vermont free hand they should have a Military Mount Warden stem. Yes it will take some work but it would be worth it those WDC pipes are worth the time and effort.

Bamboo in pipes were being made by Stanwell in the 1950's. Now that I know Ron hates bamboo will have to try and get him to make a pipe with bamboo for me.
