I've read a lot of reviews and information on these two tobaccos and am getting ready to conduct my own thorough investigation as to how similar these two are. Some say could they are identical...others, well, not sure...Let me know your thoughts...

Royal tastes closer to LL7 to me, but not as sweet. I do not agree with the internet cliche that the Captain and select Lane bulks are one and the same. There are similarities, but I find more defined taste in the Cap blends. I smoke both and have them in my larder and smoke them in comparison. I smoke a lot of RLP-6 and compared to CBW, the cut is shorter in its strands and it seems to have less nicotine. I have wondered if RLP-6 is second run CBW, being leftover or rejected CBW base.

Peter, I find myself thinking that Lane has a good base tobacco and after adding various condiment flavors new blends are created, packaged and sold. I think Lane has been very successful doing this and will continue to do so for years to come. Personally some lane blends with 1Q base I find very nice and VERY much smoother than 1Q and not have that sharp pouch smell that 1Q tends to have as well.
I have also, after being asked my thoughts about McClellend 5110, if I have noticed much of a difference between Frog Morton and 5110 and after smoking both side by side, they are close..so much so it has me wondering if 5110 is base tobacco for other blends. That is my Two cents, Mike

I asked this question and some other tobacco questions to Frank Blews of Lane Ltd years ago when Lane was still the Dunhill distributor and he told me 1Q and CBR are the same.
