90 degree weather here and my heat pump gave up the ghost.A new one cost $11,000 And I won't have air conditioning until Tuesday afternoon. So tonight I was sitting on my porch thinking about what a bad day this was,and being hot for the next two days not to mention going into debt. Then an ambulance showed up and took my neighbor to the hospital. So I guess my day could been a bit worse than it was.

My Central Air went out 3 years ago. I went out and bought 2 windows ACs and never looked back. My electric bill is cheaper. My wife's been nagging me to fix the Central Air so I guess one day I'll have to get around to fixing it.
And now to vent... I can't tell you how much it pisses me off that contractors rip off homeowners every chance they get. Case in point: I can buy a Heat Pump for roughly 2 grand ( depending on how many bells and whistles I want) and install the thing in a few hours (I have no HVAC training by the way but I've installed 2 units in the past). So lets say the contractor pays 2 grand and pays 2 shmoe's $50.00 per hour to install it. Let's say they take 6 hours. So, his out of pocket expense is a little less than 3 grand and he's making 8 thousand dollars profit? same thing goes with mechanics, plumbers and electricians.
Good luck with the heat... best to just sit in the shade, drink some iced tea and light up a bowl or 3.

I feel for you . We had to replace our 2 AC's and furnaces 2 years ago during a July heat wave. Not fun and $20,000 but after 23 years it was time.

Yea I know the feeling, just got a quote to replace boards on a deck, more than the cost of building it. Handyman labor charge is more than 500$ a day. Looks like I'll have to get the crowbar and cordless nailer out. Newer breed wants wages far outstripping their skills and hourly price of wages.
