I know there has to be a few folks here that buy whole leaf and make their own ropes or cut it for blending and to those that do, could I buy some whole leaf ..maybe 8oz total of various leaf such as latikia, VA except Red and Perique? I am wanting to try making my own rope and if that fails I can always cut it up in ribbon or something else. How much would it it cost me for to buy the leaf to try my experiment?

Have you tried searching the web for whole leaf? There are vendors that may sell a couple of ounces of what you are looking for. Try looking at wholeleaftobacco.com

leafonly.com sells 1/4 lbs. Whole leaf tobacco is really reasonably priced.

Thanks!! I am hoping to start REAL small to see if I am over my head before I buy large(from my viewpoint) and then have leaves here at the house not having a clue what to with them if everything turns into an epic failure!

Wholeleaf.com has a sampler pack Leafonly. com has those 1/4 lbs for like 4 to 6 dollars. I was completely happy right off the bat...I do like Englishes so some virginia, some orientals and some latakia...I bought some perique too but still don't care for that although I like Nightcap, Elizabethan Mixture etc. Aromatics and matured/slice type Virginias would be harder to blend.

I have some mini Cuban Cohibas that I want to use for the core of my rope..wrap them with Perique..then some Latakia..maybe Oriental then VA on the outside..

You might want to try shredding small amounts first and smoking it. You are gonna use up a lot of good tobacco making a rope that might just suck, flavor wise.

That's a great deal and contains 7 different types of tobacco at 8 oz. each ... highly recommended! Don (of WLT.com) always picks great quality leaves and I've never been disappointed.
Good advice ... smoking each leaf individually with no casings or toppings really gives you a better idea of the flavors.
One other thing, I'd recommend some cigar leaf at the core rather than a whole cigar.
Best of luck and keep us posted!

Mike, Shoot me your address and I'll put a few leaves in the mail to you. I have Virginia Brightleaf, Turkish, Fire cured and some Perique as well as Latakia but the latter 2 are already shredded.

I've been cutting up whole leaves for about two years and loving the results ( at least for English / Balkan style mixtures )....There are two sources I buy from...wholeleaf.com has a cheap sampler package and leafonly.com sells quarter lbs for around $5...It's really a good way to find out if you may want to go that route....I cut leaves with pruning shears and enjoy it but really have to be careful to not lop off a fingertip...seriously.
