While there is a quite bit to find about corn cobs on the www I can´t seem to find any information about hickory pipes. It is said that they smoke quite well and I wonder if you folks know anything about them. While in Europe cherrywood was used quite commonly hickory is not very well known in pipe smoking. Do you have a hickory pipe? Have you ever smoked one? I am curious so please enlighten me!

Great question, Frank. I wonder if everything would smell like latakia in an oak pipe.

I've never smoked a pipe made of hickory, but I have several hardwood Missouri Meerschaum pipes made from maple & a Don Warren Maple Dublin. They are all really good smokers, especially the Don Warren. The MM hardwoods smoke similar to a cob, but have a sweet taste during the break-in period & look a little nicer with the wood grain. This is what the Don Warren Maple Dublin looked like when I got it.

I smoke a rustic hickory churchwarden. Smokes cool. I did not notice a real difference in break-in time. I will try to post a picture when I get home.

No hickory here, yet. I do have three olive wood pipes that I really like. If I do get a hickory some day, it will be from Don Gillmore (Don Warren Pipes). He has made a lot of hardwood pipes. I haven't seen him make any batches of hardwood pipes recently. He's been making mostly briar and morta lately. So, he's due to make some hickory or maple pipes soon.

So I have got this wrong - MM makes some pipes out of maple but hickory is/was used by others too. Well, I guess I will have to try it and report here...

Never smoked anything but briars or cobs here. Saw a lemonwood pipe once that I was interested in but didn't pull the trigger fast enough.

You know Frank it wasn't that long ago I was thinking about digging out some Hickory and throwing it on the lathe and making a pipe out if it. Maybe I'll reconsider it to see what happens. It wouldn't be as nice as Rons or Scotties.

Great idea John! I believe a hickory pipe still should maintain a certain red neck style and not be too perfect. Let us know how it turns out i might order one from you!

I have 2 Hickory pipes from an Ebay lot. The stickers on the bottom are rubbed out, but probably MM? Maybe H & B. I think they were the forerunners of the Ozark pipes. They smoke similar to Ozark's imo, but have a bit more heft to them and vulcanite bits.

I have an old Buescher's Hickory and it pretty much smokes like maple hardwood. It does have some interesting grain patterns.

I just attended a family reunion in Kansas and I helped smoke 200 pounds of pork over hickory.....Hickory is nonexistent in the southwest...be advised Frank, if you show up around these parts I am going to get you drunk and hope you don't wake up after I smoke a pork chop with your hickory pipe.

I have yet another hardwood that hasn't been mentioned. I have a pear wood pipe with bark trim made by rekamepip (John Barrett) good smoker but you don't want to scrape the chamber down too much it seems to scratch a bit easy. GREAT smoking qualities though. Doesn't burn out when smoked properly.

Speak of the devil, Don Warren just made a test pipe out of Canarywood today. I didn't even know what that wood is.

Ok guys, just to let you know: I have bought two hardwood pipes (maple) from Missouri Meerschaum and I am just smoking one of them. At first I was slightly dissapointed because of the small size of the bowls. But it turned out that they give a decent smoke timewise. The second thing I noticed is that the bowls stays much cooler than a briar bowl. I haven´t noticed any particular strange flavour from the maple and it seems to me that MM´s hardwood pipes are up to their corn cobs! The only drawback is that I am running out of arguments for expensive pipes.
