For years, I've been watching posts from people that have bought some extremely expensive pipes. (Most likely PAD). I've bought a few of those myself. But what bothers me the most, is that some of my less expensive pipes smoke far better than the expensive ones. Tell me, in all honesty, what is your best smoking pipe, as opposed to your best (expensive) pipes?

Cobs ... can't beat them! Most of the time, grabbing a briar for me is purely aesthetic. Just grabbed this Viprati and I hope it smokes as well as a Cob: Ron makes a great smoking pipe too ... this one is a Cob competitor:

My best smoking pipe currently is my most expensive (to date), Baki Author Meer. Right on the heels of the Baki is my RobE Prince, my Basil Meadows Service Merchant Bing and my Don Warren Morta Prince. My other higher end pipes also smoke better than my less expensive pipes. Which is why I have been selling off low/mid priced pipes and acquiring higher end pipes. On the flip side I have a few Cayuga's which were inexpensive that smoke very well and consider them a great bargain and smoke better than what they cost. I do realize you can't smoke grain and ascetics, but a nicely grained pipe with a nice stem/button work add to the enjoyment for me. I personally don't think it is a coincidence that the higher priced pipes perform better than lower priced pipes. I am no way knocking lower priced pipes, I have several MM legends that I abuse badly. I also think cobs are made for burley blends and I like burley so they see a lot of action. And I have had 2 expensive pipes that were crap and sold them (with full disclosure) so price is no gaurntee to being better 100% of the time.

My solitary Dunhill smokes as good as any pipe I own . . . . but no better. It did not change my life.

I have too many great smokers to choose just one, but if I had to pick one it's my straight sandblasted pre-transition Barling Exel 249 Fossil T.V.F. black billiard with a silver band and a black ebonite military bit. I'd post it, but photoshop is throwing so many durn ads at me, that I can't add it there. Wish I could post photos from my desktop straight to here.

Tough call. For the price point, $70-100 Savinellis really smoke well.
Many of my 60's Dr. Grabows are favorite pipes and excellent smokers. Some people don't realize a primary killer of pipes is purely the draw. Some of us have taken to opening and boring out old pipes, shop pipes etc to Rick Newcombe high end specs. A pipe taken to 3.5mm in the stem and 4mm in the shank and bowl airway make a $35 basket pipe smoke better than a tight draw on a Gamboni. FYI, I've recently found out, thankfully before buying, that a $100~ Neerup smokes circles around Gambonis because of their draw. Sorry Gamboni. Anyway, as long as it's solid briar, the smoking ease of the pipe is all about an nice wide open draw. It's why cobs smokes so damn well. Wide open, no filter, and like meerschaum in cooling and drying ability.
I smoke cobs quite a lot. They can also handle thousands of bowls for under $10.
edit to add: I have a pot taken up to about 4.2mm in the shank to bowl and it smokes phenomenally. It's otherwise a St. Regis shop pipe from some unknown shop, pretty decent briar so opening it up made a world of difference.

So far I haven't come across a pipe that smokes poorly for me. Usually if I have a problem it's my fault, not the pipe. But I guess I have to say my best loved pipe so far is my BC Strawberry Rusticated that was sooooooo hard to get. I had to enlist a special agent (lol) to acquire it from the Czech Republic and then ship it to the States from Germany. I am probably the only American to own this pipe

Aaron Beck Freehand that I bought from Briar Blues site, no matter how you hold it, all the shapes fall perfectly into place, draw is the best too. seems the site is experiencing technical difficulties on photos today

This 1970 Savinelli #620 Classica blasted Oom Paul is a great smoker, but being a system pipe without filter is a tad more work to let cool down and open up to dry it clean/dry it out. This pipe was my grandfather's. This Savinelli unfinished 904KS is a superb smoker. Love it. that pot on the left is a St. Regis that has been modified to higher ended Rick Newcombe specs for a wide open draft; 3.5mm in the stem work, 4.2mm in the shank to bowl. Smokes like the best pipe you've smoked in your life. It's all in the draw. The Duncanhill Aerosphere in the middle is a fine example of problems or flaws in the pipe. Off center drilling, won't pass pipe cleaner, stem alone won't even pass a pipe cleaner, and a tighter draw. I still smoke it, it was my wife's grandfather's.

Like JimInks, I have too many great pipes to choose just one. I've been smoking pipe nearly 50 years, on and off. For me it isn't just how well it smokes, but how comfortable it is to smoke, dentures you know. I'd not smoke too often any pipe, no matter how good it smokes if it makes my gums hurt.
Now I'm tempted to get out some of my old pipes to reevaluate their smokability. I'm often drawn to my most, or more recent acquisitions. Guess cause they are "New" to me. One of which is 76 to 81 y.o.(a Parker bent billiard) Another is as least 67, my birth year Dunghill. It doesn't hurt that it also smokes very well too.

I just gave away my best smoking pipe and about a pound of tobacco to friend interested in smoking a pipe.It was a handsome straight Dublin made in Italy. I thought I should give a great smoker as gift to someone just starting out as opposed to letting him buy a crappy pipe that doesn't smoke well and maybe turn him away from pipe smoking! So far far he has been enjoying the pipe very much and is now looking into a cob or two..maybe we can split a bag of MM smokable seconds!

It depends on what i am smoking...for my english blends it would be hard to beat my W.O. Larsen Rusticated brandy, a verrry long smoke, cool and dry. For my virginia blends which are usually flakes, coins, etc... I would be hard pressed to find better pipes than my GBD's be they billiards, small Dublin, Canadian... 1954 Lumberman My Brakner from the late 50's is also a Virginia queen.
