Kicking the sh*+ with Jiminks last night, and the subject of his 43 years of pipe smoking came up. We tossed around a few figures and this is what we came up with:
43 years = 15,706 days.
Average 12 bowls a day = 188,472 bowls.
Average 3 grams per bowl = 556.416 kilos, or 1,226.69 lbs
Average $20/pound works out to $24,553.80
Note that this doesn't include the cost of his pipes.
Amazing thing is that his tongue still works at all!

Pretty good rough figure, but 3 grams is a lot of tobacco and won't fit in most bowls unless packed in really tight.
If Jim only smoked one blend, he could single handedly keep a tobacco company afloat!
This discussion had me thinking how much I've smoked in the past 5 years the other night of his anniversary. I almost smoke exactly half of what he smokes.

Those who participated in a few of them (I didn't) decided on three grams average as some pipes hold more, some less. I figured if they did the work, they knew. I never did any measuring myself. |

12 bowls a day takes a good bit of time. Amen! I smoke one Bowl going to California every night, and one bowl coming back to Arizona...I usually get close to 130 miles per bowl. |

It is a good rough estimate. I know I don't feel like doing all the science to make it any better. Of course, moisture weight, what moisture you smoke at, flake vs dry ribbon or shag, etc.
I don't think you could even fit a gram of Semois into a pipe!
Congrats on smoking a small compact car's weight worth of tobacco! When you think of it like that, it's astounding.

Amazing thing is that his tongue still works at all! Ron It seems like he does enough talking for two; all that air-flow would cool his tongue. It may be mostly hot air, but it's cooler than pipe smoke! I'll be putting a little HP sauce on my fried eggs... |

Wow, he must have always worked at home to smoke that much. No, I ran a restaurant for four years, and a comic book shop for nine before I started working at home, not to mention earlier jobs. Every job I ever had, I was able to smoke. In college, I could smoke in the dorm, in the library and in the class room. |

I have heard of most of the sodas. They are just restricted access for Yankees. 99.6% of Ostrich Egg Frying shares. Breath mints! He don't need no stinkin' breath mints. If he is breathing, he has a pipe in his mouth. Breath mints would make everything taste like your brand, Kool! |
