In 1971 I walked out of a smoke shop in Ann Arbor Michigan with my first ever briar pipe.A Savinelli Hercules with 8 sides.A few years later I decided that it was just too heavy for me so I got rid of it..Actually that's not the only reason..I was younger, thinner, had more hair, and energy back in those days.I could work all day,and chase girls at night.I thought that old man looking pipe just wasn't cool enough looking for a young buck like myself. The funny thing in this little meaning less story is that old man looking pipe is still being sold today, and I actually wouldn't mind having one. These days instead of the $23 I paid for one back in those days now they're $112.When I really think it over though at 2.7 ounces I still think they're just too heavy for me...A side note here...Most of those cool looking pipes that I bought just for image were cheap and didn't smoke well at all. They are long gone. And as I said before that old man looking pipe is still being sold all of these many years later.

I have one in the pot shape. Great smoker. Funny thing about your story is when I was the age you're talking about, some women chased me because I was the campus pipe smoker. Smoking a pipe everywhere I went, including the library, dorm, and once in a while, the classroom, got me lots of dates with lots of good looking women. For me, it was a chick magnet.

The Danish Pipe Shop is now offering the Savinelli #320 in the Hercules line. Price was around 130€. The budget version of this series was the Baronet line. I have a #510 XL Bulldog that sees duty as a movie pipe with its long burn time.

I've got a few Hercules Canadians...all are good smokers and well made...Even at the $112. mark a good price I think...also, like Jim, I smoked my pipes everywhere in college...never was an issue anywhere...

I love the 804 ks in the Hercules series. Its one of the longer canadians on the market and you can find ones 7 inches long still. Not a pipe id have hanging from my jaw but a nice home smoker.

Here is the pipe. It sold for $39.00 That's my kind of pipe. Wanted a smooth and could see fills on the pics of them online. Decided on a rusticated one. Unfortunately I did not get mine for $39
