These pipes, belonging to Raymond Burr of Perry Mason fame, recently sold for $1,902.97. I think that Jim Inks bought them, but he won't admit it!

I'm beginning to think that JimInks is more the OP's object of facination moreso than Raymond Burr's pipes and TPC members' smoked bowls per day. Old friends no doubt:-)

A pretty reasonable price considering it is a 3 pipe cased set and the provenance.

Seller stated paperwork was misplaced regarding proof of provenance, but did seem credible in his explanation and listing. Wonder if they will ever get smoked? I've watched Mr Burr through his film noir period to Mason and Ironsides and never saw him using a pipe. Of course, it was not uncommon to gift someone with a pipe then, as it was a transition many evolved to.

I know someone that was friends with Raymond Burr at one time. Next time I see him, I will ask if he ever saw Burr smoking a pipe.

In the world of collecting, without good provenance the pipe didn't belong to Raymond Burr. It may actually have, and the seller might have lost the provenance, but it is kind of silly to let the provenance get separated from the object.
In the gun community, there is a saying: 'Buy the gun, Not the story" meaning lacking provenance, that the gun is worth what it is worth...the claim of Jesse James or Al Capone's ownership doesn't factor in the final price.

Agree, and although a nice set of pipes and even without paperwork maybe worth the price, but no way would I drop that kind of coin without the paperwork.

To start with, the person who I mentioned above was a sound engineer for a recording company in Los Angeles many years ago. The way he knew Burr was that they were neighbors. They were close enough friends that Burr on occasion would come over in the morning and have coffee and sit and talk at my friend's kitchen table. This would have in the 1970s. According to him, he never saw Burr smoke a pipe.
In regards to my friend, I have been to his home and seen the gold records he won as a sound engineer. This, at least for me, verifies his stories. Your mileage may vary.

Oh, I wasn't insinuating that he wasn't on the level, the point that I was making was strictly about if someone was to purchase it with an eye towards being able to sell it as a BurrBriar in the future, having the provenance makes all the difference and has quite an impact on the worth. Raymond Burr had the same partner since 1960, and he maintains the Raymond Burr winery in Healsburg, Ca... if your friend doesn't find the paperwork and the buyer requests it, it might be a piece of cake to contact the guy... Benavides is his last name.
