...Since I started smoking a pipe , back in 1960, my preference is for plugs...I had the opportunity to smoke some of the very best plugs of the time...Most of the plugs I smoked then haven't been manufactured in years and while the newer plugs are OK...they're not what they were back then.
Now there has been a number of new plugs brought to the forefront in recent years, and are quite good...However the older manufacturers like Murray & Sons, G&H, SG, have some of the best plugs available and there are some from a few other companies that are also quite good...
While preparing a plug is time consuming, to me that is part of the "heritage" and "art" of pipe smoking. The ability to control burn, and even taste are but a few reasons I prefer the plugs.
I smoke a variety of pipe tobaccos and many are loose, ribbon, and shag cuts and they all have a place in my rotation...if you're willing to put a little extra time in preparation, you'll be rewarded!
...some of my current favorites;
SG Cob Plug Condor Plug Dan(Orlik) Salty Dogs Warrior Plug Mick McQuaid Velvan Plug G&H Kendal Dark Plug Wessex Gold Brick

Peter, that is a great list of plugs. It's funny how tastes change over time. I was primarily a latakia blend guy for the past 40 years but in the past 18 months I've really gravitated to the plugs and find myself reaching for them more often.

Don't leave out GLP's mighty Gaslight. That stuff is awesome. In fact, everything from Señor Pease is awesome.

peterd, much like you I smoke all of the drug store blends. The problem in those days was we didn't know anything about the blends themselves. I don't remember reading about the ingredients of a blend other than what may have been on the pouch, which was not much in most cases. I think revisiting some of them would be more fun today but, sadly, many are gone or have been altered so much that they don't resemble what we had 40 years ago.
