What finish do you like best in a pipe? Smooth, Rusticated, Sandblasted??? Personally, I appreciate the beauty of a smooth briar, with a nice grain pattern.

I prefer smooth with nice grain, but I have a lot of sandblasts and rusticated pipes, too. What I'm not crazy about is shiny pipes. I prefer a dull matte finish. I think it makes a difference in the heat of the chamber, and provides a cooler smoke.

Smooth by far but some blasted pipes appeal to me

Not a preference, but I appreciate the aggressive gnarly rustication you see on some Italian pipes.

I have more blasted and rusticated than smooth pipes, but it is really a simple matter for me of how pretty the pipe is. I have some wonderful smooth finished pipes that just screamed: BUY ME! And I would be remiss if I didn't say that my favorite rustic finish is the wonderful finish that a Brakner has.

I think it depends on the grain, some need to be blasted to look good, some don't. I really like Birds eye but, if the grain is ho hum or just bad, blast it is. There's some real blast and rustication artists out there, wish I was one of'em.

It depends on the shape but normally sandblasted pipes "speak" more to me. I have the feeling that they stay cooler too.

Smooth pipes catch my eye more than anything..I like a reddish stain or dark tan to highlight the grain.

I too have more rough or rusticated and sandblasted pipes than smooth ones. But I do appreciate the beauty of the smooth pipe, if it has a noticeable grain to it. A matte finished smooth pipe does nothing for me. Those I do have are often cheap knock about pipes, which often ride in the car, or ride the lawn mower. I noticed a long time ago that smooth pipes don't do well in your pocket. Rusticated or sandblasted pipes fair better with everyday useage. Some pipes I get just because of their wild rustication, or outstanding grain after being sandblasted
Like the Nording Royal Flush(Queen) above.

Smooth usually, but rusticated or sandblasted done well is right up there as well.
Brian Ruthenberg's rustication and sandblast sets my heart to pounding. Jim Brown (Heisenberg Pipes) also does one heck of a deep rustication.

Typically, I prefer a smooth pipe with nice grain, but the feel of a rusticated/blast feels nice in the hand, sometimes a combo speaks to me.

70% of my collection is rusticated/sandblasted...something about them always speaks to me...plus, they do smoke cooler as the surface area is enhanced...

Love the birds-eye and flame grain on a nice smooth but prefer the tactile feel of a Sandblast / Rustication / Cob.

Ring Grain Blast first choice followed by (not close though) regular blast. I am down to about 3 smooth finishes I believe. Those probably will be sold off or traded someday as well.
