Since my local B&M had an ownership change 15 years or so ago I have not had the pleasure of shopping at a true tobacco shop. Yesterday I stopped at Allegheney Smokeworks on my home from a terrific day at the zoo with my family. I was there just once 20 years ago and forgot what a great shop it is. Since the family was waiting in the van I didn't have much time to window shop and browse the MANY pipes and tins of tobacco available. I did manage to expand my tobacco horizons by purchasing some St. James Flake,Balkan Flake and Bulls-Eye Flake in bulk. Oh and the bulk selection was very nice and well priced to boot!
This shop is now on my list of places to go once the kids go back to school!

It looks like a couple pipe clubs aren't too far away. Found this from another site: The Pittsburgh Pipe Club, meets as stated above, at the Allegheny Smokeworks shop in Blawknox the second Saturday of the Month from 10 AM till about noon. The Washington Pipe Collectors Club meets the third Friday night of the month at a member's home in Canonsburg, PA. Go to facebook www.facebook.com/groups/804775426271812/ or look up the group Pittsburgh & Washington County Pipe Clubs. He usually posts announcements at this location.

Ain't it great to know you have another place beside The Briar Patch to meet up with friends and enjoy a pipe?

Conversely, I found a depressing B&M in Santa Rosa Ca. Called "The Humidor".
I found myself in need of a hydration stone as I noticed that an open tin had the moisture level heading the wrong direction. Found the store inside the mall, really tiny and the guy working the counter had no personality... he acted mad that I interrupted his solitude. The selection sucked, really no pipe tobacco but pouches of Sail or tins of Captain Black.
Fortunately, they did have hydration stones, and since they are cheap at my B&M, about 60 cents, I said "I will take three".
"that will be $4.95" as he rung me up.
I guess that I should be thankful that there are any B&M's left in California after the legislature basically stuck a dagger into them.

Yikes Charlie.... it is a shame when GOOD stores are replaced by terrible shops staffed with jerks!
