It's often confusing and sometimes daunting trying to pick out the flavors and aromas that reviewers talk about. The bready nuttiness, the sweet tangy citrus, and so forth. If you don't pick up these nuances from the blend reviewed it shouldn't be a concern. If that blend that promises little to no tongue bite leaves you feeling as if you sucked on a blow torch well that may be operator error. But tastes ( palette ) is very subjective. I've smoked cigarettes for over 30 years and as such my ability to pick up on subtle flavors is almost null. When I read the reviews,I'm looking more at if a blend needs drying time,or if it's sickly sweet.A lot of what I enjoy has a vanilla topping. I can feel the creaminess more than taste it,cherry is almost lost and chocolate has to be over the top for me to really notice. That would be why I'm leaning more and more to the english and oriental blends. But getting back to what I wanted to convey,if you can pick up on the same flavor profile that the reviewers state Cool,in fact Super Cool. But if you can't,focus on what you do taste and smell. Is it appealing enough to try or buy more.Don't just assume that you must be doing something wrong.Assume that your palette is unique and be greatfull otherwise we would all be smoking the same blend and that would stifle discussions.

I blew out my taste buds years ago. I rely heavily on Tobaccoreviews.com for a lot of information and have several reviewers that I feel mirror my tastes; jiminks being chief among them.

Yeah...I use to weld galvanized steel, horizontal jackhammering where the face got powdered, and a gazillion other instances of breathing in God knows what...like John, by buds don't pick up much, but the good work of others helps heighten my senses on what to look for, and at times it helps me pick out the flavors.
We once had a generous benefactor that sent out samples from a really old rare tin, he got pretty pissed that some of us didn't post our reviews...that just isn't my bag for the reasons mentioned above.

My taste has changed from my pre-illness days 3-4 years ago. So I am not going to be reviewing any blends. I just hope to keep what working buds I have left at this point. I do enjoy reading the difference in reviews though.

...even after 56 years of pipe smoking, my sense of taste, aroma, and feel-in-the-mouth, is as strong as ever...I don't normally depend on any reviews to decide about a tobacco. I do read them to get a better understanding of new offerings or re-issues, but all folks taste, etc. are so subjective, I don't put much stock into them...I know what I enjoy and tend to gravitate towards tobaccos that include components I know I like...

I hope no ones is taking my statements as advice not to read reviews. On the contrary I read up on new blends that show up in my cellar.I'm just saying don't get discouraged if your take is not the same as the other guys.If I post a review, quite often it will be on the emotions that surface when smoking, the memories a blend conjures up. That's why I like Alexander Bridge not the taste, although it's quite good,it reminds of visiting my step-Grandfather.He was a hoot, chewed wads of tobacco, his buddy smoked a pipe and I swear it had to be close to AB.
No,I read the reviews and believe that they are helpful, just treat them as gospel, treat them as a guidepost.A tool that may help you in your journey.

Well for starters just pick a Virginia and a Burley . Can you taste the difference ? Burley leaves my mouth dry with alkaline taste . Perique tastes of black pepper . Latakia is smoke , think charcoal . Once you figure out a few flavors you can look for more . Just find what you like and build on that .

I don't think I much of a palette. The nose tells me what is in the tin or bag. Maybe that's why I tend to go for the more bold flavored tobaccos and coffee. I think you get that way when you got older.Subtle just isn't my forte any more. Cheese, I want the sharp stuff.

Palette? Isn't that what artist use to put dabs of paint on while doing a painting?
