How many of you are loyal to a particular pipe tobacco? And how many of you are loyal to a particular company's products? If so, what are they? If not, why not? For those who aren't, were you ever loyal to a blend or brand?

I'd say through thick and thin and no matter their problems, I'm pretty loyal to Cornell & Diehl. I really like their "tobacco ideals," so to speak. Jeremy is committed to putting American tobaccos first, primarily focusing on good old American Burley and Virginia grades and they have amazing customer service. They may have had a couple mold issues, but regardless they take care of the customer and they make a TON of tobaccos genres to suit anyone.
McClelland used to be my favorite but they're decidedly a bit more one dimensional and only focus on Virginias as their primary preferred leaf. Still love McClelland. Then comes Gawith Hoggarth.
Overall, I love all of them for the very same reasons. They stick to what they know and they stand behind their traditions. GH make the best English tobaccos ,IMO, and they are just about all perfect.
I could live with only these 3 tobacco brands and never buy anything else. Caveat, I already have a lot of SG blends stored but I'll somewhat lump them in there with GH for obvious reasoning.

I am not loyal per say but I am more unloyal to brands. I dont smoke or buy Macbaren, Sutliff and C&D and anything that they process or have ties with. Unless of course I like it which would only occur if it was liked before I became unloyal or I didn't know there was a connection and I liked it. There are various reason but mostly they either put something in there baccy that my mouth doesn't like or they had some other issues with long term storage.

I cut my pipe smoking teeth on Captain Black, so I will always have it around. Probably my next favorite is MacBaren, as I seem to like a lot of their tobaccos. I do like the variety options of C&D.

I am loyal to a couple of P&C Hearth and Home blends. This is due to fact that I am really fond of the fruity Perique they use. Truth be told though if I could find something like it somewhere else, I would flee like a rat off a sinking ship. Nothing against them but I had an unpleasant experience with their parent company a few years back and giving them my money really grinds my gears.
I am loyal to a couple C&D blends. Winchester is my everyday tobacco and I really like Pennington Gap. I will be smoking those two blends as long as they are around.

Being primarily an aro smoker and starting out with OTCs I stick with Middleton's blends. Other than that I'll buy anything and if I like it I'll keep buying til I get tired of it.

I'm not loyal to any particular brand as I can't smoke a brand. Blends on the other hand do get my loyalty. A lot of these are Hearth & Home, GL Pease, McCranie's, McClelland, Rattray's, Mac Baren, HU, and Esoterica. Here's a list of some of the blends that I have cellared and smoke, in no particular order: HU Director's Cut HU Mahkuwa HU 5th Anniversary Blend H&H Anniversary Blend H&H Viprati H&H Chatham Manor H&H BlackHouse Motzek Strang Esoterica Dunbar Esoterica Dorchester Esoterica Stonehaven GLP Union Square GLP Telegraph Hill GLP Haddo's Delight GLP Fillmore GLP Stonehenge Flake RO GP-11 RO Acadian Perique D&R VIP MacBaren St Bruno Savinelli Doblone D'Oro Germain's RDF C&D Yorktown 4 Noggins Bald Headed Teacher McCrainie's Red Ribbon and Red Flake McClelland Christmas Cheer Rattray's HOTW Rattray's Marlin Flake Rattray's Red Rapparee Rattray's Black Mallory Mac Baren HH Bold Kentucky SG St James Flake SG Full Virginia Flake F&T Cut Virginia Plug Brigham Klondike Gold John Aylesbury Luxury Flake Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake The Smoker Ltd Easy Chair GLP Sixpence Peter Heinrich's Curly Block Peter Heinrich's Reserve Cru #2 and #4 Astley #44 Astley #109 SToP Warhorse RR and Bar SToP Bengal Slices SToP John Cotton #1 mild McClelland Jubilee

My 'puter tells me that in addition to most of sable's fine list are a flock of Hermits, Dans, Dunhills, Danish Pipe Shop MOBs, a lot more Peases and Esotericas occupy my Top300 Cellar.

Hard to believe there is no mention of Stokkebye in this thread. About the best priced bulks and a varied selection.

(IMO)...The days of Loyalty are gone! The tobacco companies either keep raising their prices on the currently popular brands, or they discontinue some of the old time favorites, and then come up with 'Match Blends', which most of their reviewers claim are 'either close' or not the same. We don't owe loyalty to them, they owe loyalty to the Pipe Smoking Community. Just typical as to how our society has adopted this philosophy toward the American consumer.

Hard to believe there is no mention of Stokkebye in this thread. About the best priced bulks and a varied selection. I do stock their Luxury flakes, all three and they are hands down absolutely great flakes and tobacco, but most of their other bulk tobaccos don't make it up on my list of favorites so that brand just about slips to fourth on my brand list. It's very hard to place. I also know for a fact there are hundreds of smokers out there that just buy 5-10 pounds of LNF, LBF, and/LTF and economically smoke just that one blend/brand. overall I really like the variety given by being able to have over 100 blends in my house. Reality is most of us are not just loyal to one brand, but if I were to count tins and pounds, I would be a C&D fanboy first and foremost.

That's a lot to handle. OGS has never let me down when I needed a good smoke. I buried my father with that one, all I took for the road trip. Reckon that qualifies as being dedicated to a tobacco. McClelland and Mac Baren have always had my favor and are significantly represented in my cellar. I have more tobacco on hand now than I'll ever be able to smoke. I've pretty much stopped on that one.

Sable please post the blends you don't like . For me Rattrays because of the Virginia used in the blends. GLP the man is a genius and the 8oz tins .

...Loyalty...Of all the tobaccos I've smoked and possess, there would be less than 5 that I would classify as something I was loyal to...Condor 'all versions', original St. Bruno Flake, Warrior Plug, and SG Cob Plug aka 1792.

Good choices! I'd cross a river of flaming snot to get at some St Bruno! The old Ogden product was a better balanced and more elegant blend that the Mac Baren version, but I thoroughly enjoy St Bruno in all of its various incarnations.

Sable please post the blends you don't like . For me Rattrays because of the Virginia used in the blends. GLP the man is a genius and the 8oz tins . That would be difficult for two reasons. First, I don't like the vast majority of tobaccos that I've tried so that list would be really long list, and probably extremely irritating to a number of other members here. Second, I try to put bad experiences behind me, learn from them and move on. But since you're asking, I'll give you a few: Esoterica Penzanace - First tried it in 2006 and hated it. Jarred the rest to let it age with the hope that it would turn into something or that my tastes might change. Tried that 2006 jar last year and still hated it. Since so many others like it, I bring it to pipe club meetings and let others enjoy it. For me, it's simply a badly balanced blend. I have about 3 pounds of it cellared for trading, gifting, and maybe gouging. It's certainly safe from smoking by me. I find much of the Esoterica line unappealing. I found Knightsbridge a bore, tasteless. But the fellow who gifted me with a bag thought it was the best blend in the known universe. Germain's Balkan Sobranie - I used to smoke Balkan Sobranie in the 1970's thru 1990's. Loved the stuff. So when I heard that Germain's was producing it again I rejoiced and bought a stack of tins. Big mistake. I found it to be an ugly flavor and not of the quality that I had enjoyed. I've since been told by another member on a different forum, that Germain's realized that they had screwed the pooch and that later tinnings are better. I still have that stack of tins, and I've added a few to it for trading purposes down the road. Or, maybe I'll sell it for an unethical amount to gimlet eyed acolytes. I did have an opportunity to compare the Germain's BS against both WhiteKnight and 1980's era Balkan Sobranie a couple of years ago. WhiteKnight was pretty close to the original, allowing for changes in the blend due to age. Certainly it was MUCH better than Germain's. Save yourself some money and aggravation and buy WhiteKnight. McClelland Bombay and Bombay Extra - They're not bad blends, but I just don't like the strongly "wine-like" character. In point of fact, I don't like about 90% of the various English blends that I've tried over the years. I worked my way through much of the Peretti English blends and just don't like the flavors of those blends. They're not bad blends. I just don't like the flavors. I tend to like English blends that have a good amount of Macedonian leaf in them, like Balkan Sasieni. There was one blend made by Mel Feldman that I really liked. It was called Easy Chair, and had that Macedonian leaf in perfect proportion. Alas, Mel had retired and the blend was no longer made. Then I heard that Russ had the rights to reissue Mel's blends. So I ordered 5 pounds of it and Russ blended it for me. Happy Camper. I'm not partial to strongly fruity aromatics, don't smoke cherry blends, or any of that. So feel free to round up the several thousand of those in production and list them as blends I don't smoke. Having said that, I do like Exotic Orange, Peter Heinrich's Reserve Cru #4, and have a tin of HU Cherry Serrano waiting for the right occasion to give it a whirl. I like Esoterica Dunbar and Dorchester, both of which are laced with Apricot. So I'm not opposed to aromatics in any way. They make up 90% of tobaccos sold. They're mostly just not for me. Lat bombs - Some years back I really burned out on Latakia to the point that the mere thought of it gave me the heaves. That's when I really dove into Virginias and their variant blends. Then, a couple of years ago, I received some pre-release John Cotton's and really enjoyed them. Latakia is back in more condimental amounts. Lat bombs just aren't for me. Been there, done that. Everybody likes different things, experiences flavors in different ways. Rattray's HOTW really opened up the world of Virginia blends for me. It also schooled me in technique since it can get very hot very fast and be really unpleasant. But smoked more slowly than one might think possible, it's a very satisfying blend, especially on the retrohale. Old Growrie doesn't do anything for me. Captain Black - There was a time in my smoking journey that I smoked Captain Black White and only Captain Black White. It was my moon and sixpence, my alpha and omega. Then I decided to broaden my horizons and move on. A couple of decades passed and I thought that it might be fun to reacquaint myself with an old friend. It was not a happy reunion. My once adored blend tasted of chemicals, chemicals, and more chemicals. It was just foul. I guess you can't go home again. So that's it. See? Isn't it good that I opted to list and discuss only a few? Are you still there? Wake up!

Almost identical for me, Jesse.
Forget Esoterica. Not a lat fan much, a few times a year usually less than once every other month or so I may like a couple bowls of a great lat blend. Of course you know what I think of Germain's Balkan Sophony. I won't even try Captain Black because I can't stomach goopy black Cavendish. Doesn't even taste like tobacco. (I've never tried any Cap Black) McClelland Bombays I've yet to try.
We like a lot of the same tobaccos but I also have a penchance to smoke mostly high nicotine blends.

I'm a nic wimp, so I've avoided a lot of highly regarded nic bombs. That said, there are a few stronger blends that I do smoke, like St Bruno. The funny thing is that sometimes St Bruno doesn't affect me strongly and other times it gives me the spins. Ditto with Warhorse Bar. Sometimes it doesn't affect me and other times it really knocks me on my arse.

I agree with Sable on Latakia as a condiment.... I once attended a lat bomb fest that kinda resulted in an experience not unlike, where I got so wasted on Peppermint Schnapps that I puked up the same flavors.... that experience ruined me forever on Peppermint Schnapps, fortunately I reigned the Lat horse in before going over the cliff. Since then I like it condimentally....

I'm as loyal to a company as they are to me. Escudo has always been my morning smoke so I reckon you could say I'm loyal to it. As far as other blends go I'll get stuck on one blend for awhile and then change to another for awhile and that really depends on how much of it I have cellared or can afford to order. Tobacco for me is an expensive luxury and I must savour and at the same time save for the future.
Oh! And I do like Dunhill mixture 965 in the summertime.

Never thought about loyalty to any company. I like variety so I get tired of a blend quickly. 4 or 5 bowls is enough of a streak for me. I've cellared deep on a few blends. Now they're deep in the back of my stash. I cellar wide now.

There is no blender/company loyalty. They make their changes at will and raise the price at the drop of the hat. So I smoke what I can find in the genra I like.
