A little over two hours ago I was heading out to put gas in my car. I have to jump on the interstate and go across the river to get to my preferred gas station. As I was coming around the exit ramp I hear this loud pop/crash and look to my left to see a black Ford SUV bouncing against the cement median and plastic lenses flying everywhere. I do not see anyone in the cabin of the vehicle. There is a highway building and state trooper office right there and I pull into the parking lot. I didn't have my phone so I go over to the building and bang on the door. There is no trooper vehicle there, but there was a highway vehicle. About this time another vehicle has stopped on the other side and the guy gets out and runs over to the SUV and looks inside, he looks over at me and yells that an ambulance is needed. No one has come to the door so I bang on it again. A worker sticks his head out and I explain what happened and that I didn't have a phone. He goes back inside to tell his supervisor who then comes out and calls 911. By this time the guy that stopped is also on his phone. An ambulance happens to come by and drives slowly but keeps going. Shortly after that a city cop stops. As he is assessing the situation and contacting dispatch the ambulance that went by comes back on my side of the road and pulls up right alongside the SUV. I watch for a couple minutes, then decide to go on and get fuel then stop on the way back to see if the cops need to talk to me. As I'm going up to the emergency vehicles they are just pulling the guy out on a back board and load him into the ambulance. I told the cop what I saw but he didn't take a statement. I came home, calmed down some, had something to eat and then got on Facebook to post about my adventure. After posting that a news article came up in my newsfeed from Resq WV, which is an emergency services bulletin board on Facebook that I subscibe to. The article was about the accident I just witnessed and it stated that the driver was given Narcan. As loud as the noise was, he was going pretty fast when he passed out. Sitting here I then realized that if not for the cement median dividing us, I might have been involved in a head-on collision with that vehicle. It would have been a very bad accident. You just never know. A very sobering thought.

Glad you're OK, Maggie. This is becoming an all too frequent occurrence on our highways.

About six months ago, for over a hundred miles one night, I played frogleap with a container jockey headed to the port of Long Beach...he was swerving all over the road and would slow down to 50 mph, I would go around him hoping he wouldn't wreck into me as I passed him. He would fade in my mirror then come blasting past me, and do that same thing again...happened about six times. He was in front of me as we neared Quartzsite Arizona, and almost took out a car as he fell asleep and rolled the rig in the center divide, I saw it all.
I hung out, and a couple Arizona department of transportaion officers (state troopers) arrived on the scene, and the guy with numerous stripes on his sleeve let me know he was in command....he was an older dude that was physically fit, had the crew cut, stuck out his chest and looked like he missed his calling as the original "the Gunny"...he arrogantly asked me what I was doing there and I told him that I witnessed the erratic driving for over a hundred miles.
"WHAT MAKES YOU SO SURE THAT THIS IS THE SAME TRUCK?" he barked in my face...just then his attention was distracted by the firemen that said that loose beers had tumbled out the windshield....."YOU WAIT HERE" he said as he turned away to attend to rip into the Chinese guy driving the truck..I lost an hour and a half, that I will never get back. I will render aid to any crash victims, but from here on out, I am not getting involved.

this cop had a crew cut too, lol. but after reading that the driver was given Narcan there really wasn't much reason for a statement, so now i understand why he wasn't that interested.

Wow you are lucky you were in the right place at the right time. I'm very glad to hear you're ok. Why would someone go and operate their vehicle after taking a heavy narcotic combatant? Most likely because they had shot up heroin and then been given Narcan. Why they were in a position to be ALLOWED to leave or drive after that is nuts.

Gave the Narcan to bring him down from an overdose of heroin. Most likely fell asleep at the wheel. You are living right, Maggie Someone above was looking after you.

Unfortunately in WV this is an epidemic. This is the first instance I've heard of where a person has shot up and then got in their vehicle and driven away. Typically people are found passed out in their vehicle at a gas station or parking lot (I assume that is where they made their purchase) and sadly many of those instances had their kids strapped in the backseat with them. A few months ago it was in the news every week. Haven't heard of any lately, hopefully they are getting help. I guess it took a little longer to hit this guy.

Yeah, it was very disconcerting to look over at the vehicle coming to a stop and seeing no one behind the wheel. Evidently he wasn't wearing a seat belt either, just passed out and slumped over into the seat, must have still had his foot on the accelerator, because he hit hard.
Thank you for your comments. I certainly try to live right. Just glad this incident wasn't worse.

The heroin epidemic has affected me personally as well. I'm only turning 28 years old the 6th of next month and at least 5 people I knew and went to high school with have died from heroin since we got out of school in 2008. More than 5 people from a school which was 7-12 grade no more than 1,200-1,300 students.

It is. One of them was essentially murdered with heroin. The people selling it to him purposely admitted to giving him a large dose to make him pass out so they could steal all his belongings. He started overdosing so they literally took him out to the woods and left him there. These people the last I knew were walking free. Others died with a needle still in their arm.

oh my, thay is horrible! around here the heroin has been particularly strong, hs some nasty added ingredient in it which caused instant overdoses. I believe that at least in our area dealers are being charged with attempted murder or murder depending on if the victim lives or not.

It's been cut with mostly Fentanyl which is pharmaceutical grade synthetic heroin 10x stronger than pure heroin. They think they are getting heroin. The other really nasty stuff that's starting to show up is cut with elephant tranquilizer and Fentanyl which will just about kill you instantly they are saying.

yup! that's the stuff. I think it was in March of this year there were a rash of overdoses in Huntington that had EMS scrambling all over town for almost 48 hours administering Narcan, that was when it first showed up in our area. Then the Monday after Easter some people went to check on some family members they hadn't seen for Easter dinner and found the mom and dad dead of heroin overdose and their young kids alone in the house.
