What do you think about when you're sitting and smoking your pipe? This question has been asked many times on pipe smoking forums..Today I was thinking about prices when I got married..Here are a couple..A whole rotisserie chicken one buck..Sides 50 cents each..A loaf of bread 25 cents..Pepsi 25 cents. If you add this up my wife and I could both eat a whole meal for a total of three bucks. The not so good news is That was an hour's pay.In 1971 When I started pipe smoking Lane bulk was $10 a pound. You could buy a good pipe for $25..I remember once telling the owner of a smoke shop that I would never pay $100 for a pipe even if it was a Dunhill. I really wanted to stress a point here. For the first 25 years that I smoked pipes prices went up only a little. In the last 20 years they have gone through the roof and still rising.Retired guys on fixed incomes and young guys with families are finding it more difficult to engage in this activity. If you pay $6 an ounce for a 2 ounce tin of tobacco that's almost $100 dollars a pound.

I am the retired guy, but thankfully I stocked an adequate cellar before retirement, I want to try many different tobaccos I see out there today and replenish some others. Thankfully I work part time and can devote some of the earnings to my TAD. PAD, except for the occasional estate, forget about it.

...It is very disappointing to see what continues to happen price wise...even in the 90's I wasn't paying more than $4-5 for a tub of OTC tobacco and less than $10. for "premium" tobaccos.
