Most members here importing tobacco from elsewhere are already used to ridiculous warning labels all over the lovely artwork on a tin of tobacco. In my parts of the Dark Continent such warning labels/stickers are compulsory by law. As I often travel to Namibia, I have had to get used to their compulsory graphic warnings as well. Popping into the local B&M in Windhoek, Namibia for a few tins now goes something like this: "I would like to have two tins of those with the picture of the rotten teeth (Irish Flake) and a tin of that one with the picture of a gangrenous foot (Old Dublin), please." In Australia, where my brother lives, they have adopted plain packaging (a uniform drab olive green) with graphic warnings as law on all tobacco products. Just thought I'd give y'all a heads up on the shape of things to come: Here's a pic of a tin (yes, a tin!) of Amphora Full Aroma (Red, as we know it) purchased in Australia. Should I laugh, or cry? I'm getting too old for this shite.

On this subject I could start a rant that would probably get me kicked out of here..Let me just say that labels won't have any effect on my pipe smoking.

More foolishness to scare all the Sheeple, and save lives...well just like the quote from Fight Club " On a fine enough time line, the survival rate for everyone is still zero"

That would've encouraged me to smoke back in the punk years. We would have been trying to collect the whole set, and gluing them to our leather jackets!

There was a joke at one time about a notorious airline here in the States; "fly Alleghany Air, where they tag your luggage and your toe." The regulations to cover once beautiful art work on tins ahs probably made those older tins more valuable to collectors. So well done Mr. Government. The new pictures and warning may actually create another collector genre. I can see someone offering to trade a rotten teeth tin for a lopped off foot tin to complete a set. Again, well don, Mr. Government.

We would have been trying to collect the whole set, and gluing them to our leather jackets! yep! and we'd had empty tins for spare patches, pins, studs, and spikes! I've been dragging my butt sewing up pipe slots in my old leather. I should get on that before the pipe & cigar expo in Aug.

It's the World Health Organization doing this. Aka, the Nazis that believe they can control what everyone eats and breathes. It's just European countries that I know of this far. We don't have any shitty labels like that on tobacco here yet, not even European tobaccos. They can still sell them to the US the way they used to be labeled. Putting these graphics on the U.K. Tobaccos and Others is just ridiculous. I'm sure they're going to try something here too.

Politicians and bureaucrats kill more people than pipe tobacco does... by a wide margin.

If the "Deeming Rule" is implemented as written, same will happen here in the USA, where 30% of label must be a warning label. www.fda.gov/TobaccoProducts/Labeling/Labeling/ucm524470.htm

In Germany pipe tobacco and cigars still have on the "General surgeons warning..." stickers on them. Of course they are large and not much art-work is left on the tins. Cigarettes of course have the "shock-pictures" that look downright silly/funny most of the time. Showing a guy on a bed with a pale face: Oh well, he is so pale, must have died of smoking!

Maybe about 15 years or so ago, I read some kind of rebuttal to the"Truth" adds that were peppering network advertising. It basically stated that the study numbers were padded by including all smokers that died within the study period, no matter how they died. Homicide, traffic incidents, in home accidents... I can't remember the source. It could have been a punk 'zine or a reputable source. I just can't recall. My mind is hardwired to question everything. Ever since I was a small child. I look at things from as many angles as I can imagine, logical and illogical. I can't say one way or the other whether it's fact or the inane rambling of some conspiracy whackadoodle. Neither one would surprise me. Coming from a logical stand point, it makes sense to pad the numbers to build a stronger shock and awe case for their cause. People have been using those tactics for centuries.

I guess we could just changing the blend names to things that involve dying. Amphora Red Puddle. Captain Black Lungs. Capstan Turning Blue. So on, so forth.

It really has nothing to do with health, it is all about control. Alcohol has much more of a detrimental effect on society... The effects on the body by heavy use of alcohol, complications from interactions with medicines are rarely named but when my wife worked in a gastroenterology practice, it was a constant problem (especially with aged patients) being treated for diseases that continued to drink vastly complicating the treatment of other diseases up to and including death... but alcohol intake isn't listed as the cause.
Automobile accidents caused by drinking.
Destruction of families by alcoholic parents, etc...
When you sum it all up, pipe and cigar smoking poses far less of any type of threat... but alcohol is a sacred cow of the politicians and bureaucrats because they enjoy adult beverages, and the declining numbers of smokers make them an easy target for the nonsense.
I am not making the case for them putting pictures of a rotten human liver, or a picture of a decapitated driver on champagne bottles, I like a drink or two myself.
It is all about selective appreciation of individual liberties, and it doesn't have a thing to do with health. And the vast number of drinkers wouldn't tolerate the bs...

Look what happened during the first prohibition in the United States. They are doing the same thing with tobacco, only slowly to get the general public on their side. And you're absolutely right, it's about control. If I'm sitting in my back yard having a pipe or cigar, it's doing negligible damage unlike the cars and trucks driving too fast up and down our street. I imagine the amount of traffic with the exhaust emissions to be much worse.

Indeed. Not to sound like a broken record here, but how often do hear stories about pipe smoking being involved in gang violence? Or headlines like "man was smoking his pipe just before beating his wife", or "in a tobacco induced rage". It's a joke. Yes, tobacco is harmful, but there are much bigger fish to fry folks.

Well nobody is trying to ban tobacco because they think it makes you harmful towards others so that's a bit of stretch. They've been wanting to ban tobacco for second hand smoke and how many people die from "CIGARETTE SMOKING" which pipe smoking is not. People aren't actually dying due to any other type of tobacco usage, but they don't want people to think that. They want to lump it all together. Nobody at all dies from pipe smoking. Nobody at all dies from dipping or using dry nasal snuff. Nobody at all. Even people like Laurel and Hardy back in the day who smoked until the second they died and even with scarred mouths and oral hygiene issues from smoking, did not die from smoking. Very VERY heavy pipe smokers. Smoked all day every day. The mouth is the fastest healing area of the body, the lungs, are not. Inhaling constant tobacco smoke is not healthy. Again though, it's also really about as carcinogenic as many other things. Nitrosonornicotine is the primary carcinogen but it's probably about as carcinogenic overall as eating too many sodium nitrated processed meats, burned and grilled meats, breathing polluted air in large cities, etc.
My problem is it's not the government's god damned business what I put in my own body as an adult. I'm not a drug user or into heavy drugs but I'm a libertarian when it comes to government. If I want to smoke crack cocaine all day it's none of your business so long as I don't harm others or endanger others' freedoms. That's my view. It's not their right at all, this government is going to need to change. Just as I will keep all my guns no matter what kinds of goofy propagandish reasons they craft in order to instill fear in people. Every American adult should be carrying. Anyway, it's not their right to any of this tobacco control and I see it going as alcohol prohibition went.

Well, what I was getting it at was more along the lines of shouldn't we be more worried about things like gang violence, domestic abuse and hate crimes than tobacco. I didn't mean for it to sound like they were trying to ban it for inciting violence, just that there is violence, which actually needs to be intervened, while you have hundreds of thousands of tax dollars pouring into FDA legislation, drunks are still causing far more damage than smokers.

Which is a huge lie that hs been repeated so many times, that it has become the truth.
I do know, and I have seen peer reviewed studies that people that promote fumiphobia have a tendency to engage in necrophelia.

The whole Big Brother/Nanny State thing is the only topic that gets me hotter than watching TV commercials. As smokers, we need to pool our money and buy commercial slots and billboard space right along side of theirs and scream into their patronizing faces "WE DON'T (expletive) CARE. THIS IS MY ONE (expletive) LIFETIME AND I'LL SMOKE TILL MY (expletive) TEETH FALL OUT IF I (expletive) CHOOSE." Seriously. I think every person in the free world knows tobacco (especially ciggies) are bad for you. As adults we make an informed decision to smoke. Their labels are childish and insulting.

The BMI calculator is so pointless. Even in the Army when I was running 4-5 miles a day with a two mile time just over 12 minutes, I was overweight at 6'2" 220lbs and needed to be 'taped.' -That is the method used to determine percentage of body fat, for all you lucky devils who didn't have to suffer the humiliation of said test every four months. I'd love to be 220 again. haha Anyway, my point is the BMI was put together by some random swede and has nothing to do with levels of health or fitness of individuals. Smokers needing lungs, I get it, but how can you punish people who are naturally built differently than others? Here a a couple pics of my 'Overweight' days haha In this one I was like a pound shy of 'obese' (Me on The Left-Smoking Two Cigarettes)

Every American adult should be carrying. I'll argue with you on this point. I know lots of people who don't have the sense to carry a drivers license , much less a gun. Then there are all the Goobers and Boofers going into Walmart wearing their camouflage shorts, fluorescent orange shirts, and Confederate colored Crocks. Those people should not be allowed to own a gun, well maybe a squirt gun.

The world is full of dumb, nervous, careless, clumsy, and yes malicious people who would only spell trouble for those around them. I have actually advised two of my friends (brothers) against buying guns because they are accident prone to the point of their screwing up being a safe bet.
