I just purchased a large lot of pipes and received these two Tinder Box Samplers with the 48 pipes and several stands. I don't know much about these but they are pretty awesome looking. Not sure how old they are but one of the boxes is not even open and full of 6 one ounce samples. The other box is open and two of the samples are empty but the other four are still full of tobacco. The flavors are Special, Philosopher, Lamplighter, Connoisseur, and the empty ones are norse Gold and skilling. It looks like they still produce all of these blends. any experience with any of these blends, any information on how old these samplers might be and if the tobacco would be affected by the age if they are 10-30 year old samplers.

Coming from a guy who just smoked 73 year old tobacco earlier this afternoon, I say go for smoking them. They are probably from the late 70's but someone like JimInks may know more if he's smoked any of those.

I have smoked them. I bought one of those samplers in 1980 (they had three different ones as I recall). I remember seeing those tins all through the 1980s, but I don't recall them after that. Those tins are pretty good, but I'd open them up and smoke the daylights out of them. Couldn't tell you if they're still fresh though.
Most Tinderbox blends are repackaged Lane or Stokkebye blends.

Thanks Jim and Zach I appreciate the input. I have every intention of smoking these. I was pretty excited when I saw that they weren't just empty canisters but that they were sealed and full of tobacco. I haven't dealt much in aging tobacco yet but I have started my cellar this year and have set back a few boxes full of tins to revisit in 10-15 years. Great to here from the pros on the old sampler pack.

That's a pretty good find. Chances are people that love those particular blends somewhere out there are willing to pay just for one or two of those sealed tins, what you paid for the whole lot; definitely would be worth some money to the right person for both sets if they were full and sealed.

First thing I saw was the shape just below the top of the tin. That is reminiscent of when beer cans went from straight to curved... Seventies. That said, I am drooling.
