As I mentioned in a previous thread this evening, I picked up an unopened tin of Velvet today @ an antique shop.
So, firstly, how do I go about determining the age of this tin?
Secondly, having never ever tried this tobacco, is it worth popping the top and givin it a whirl or not?
Thanks in advance
Dino

Let me know who made it from the side of the tin. I saw your picture in the other thread, and estimate it to be from the early to late 70's but the manufacturer matters. I've had a bunch from 1970-1971 jarred up and it's a pretty good smoke. Never smoked the modern Velvet or Prince Albert, but I've smoked several pocket tins of both from 1970. Definitely smoke it if it's sealed, and don't rehydrate even if bone dry, it could get funky and ruin it all. Smoking old Velvet dry is great!

Just pulled it down from the shelf... It says "The Pinkerton Tobacco Company, Owensboro KY"

That's an OTC that's been around forever. What kind of top does it have?

Velvet tobacco was being sold prior to 1911 by Spaulding and Merrich of Chicago in short pocket tobacco tins. In 1912 however, Liggett and Myers were selling Velvet in standard size pocket tins. The lithography had the name written in smoke until at least 1918, and between 1916 and 1918 the name of the company was added to the can. About 1926 they introduced a new label that had a shield/coat of arms in the center of the label. Pinkerton took over production for three short years from 1983-1986 and was actually typically considered the WORST Velvet ever. Tins ive had range from 1969-1976 depending. I hadn't one or two I believe that we're "Liggett & Myer (L&M) and they changed names to "Liggett Group" in 1976. A few tins I thought were earlier 70's are apparently most likely 1976 tins.

I'm thinkin the bar code being on the can puts it in the late 70's or early 80's but I really have no idea.

It's Pinkerton so it's 1983-1986, actually. Let's get a picture of the manufacturer on the side of the tin.

Mid 80's, absolutely. Right before it was passed off to Lane/STG for production. Like I said up there in my last post, Pinkerton was widely considered the worst of all Velvet productions, but I'd still smoke it!

I'll pop it open here in the next couple of days and report back. Right now I'm enjoyin a nice bowl of 2 yo Dorchester. My first time, great smoke.

Any time I can help. I know billyklubb had a bunch of the Pinkerton tins sometime last year. He might pop in, but ultimately just smoke it up for yourself and share some with your son. Time travel back to the 80's. Enjoy.

The Pinkerton I have is Half & Half. I'm thinking of bringing it to the Cities in August to share the horrific flavor of plastic burning... Err... I mean the wonderful glory.
I had some Velvet from the late '60s that was pretty darn good.

It's on the list of things to try, but many of the OTCs are surprisingly expensive. Take Carter Hall for example. More expensive than imported Gawith Hoggarth blends just about so I can't justify buying a tub most the time. I will eventually throw a pouch on an order.

Zach, I stopped in a small shopping strip tobacco shop yesterday and picked up the small boxes/pouches of Carter Hall, Prince Albert and Middletons cherry all for something like $2.79 a piece. Cheaper than I've found em online. But, their tubs of Carter Hall were like $39.

I really lucked out a few years ago and found only two tubs of Carter Hall remaining at a Tobacco Stop shop across the street from one of my real B&Ms. $15 a tin so I bought em both. Have one left but may never buy Carter Hall again.
