As some of you know, I picked up a Calabash pipe from an antique store today... thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/1595/gourd-calabash-questionAfter gettin her cleaned up (just the stem, everything else was in great shape) I put her on the shelf and just admired her. Reading comments here and elsewhere, I learned that these pipes smoke dry and cool. Not knowing anything about anything, when it comes to calabash's or meerschaum pipes for that matter, I reached out to JimInks and asked if there was anything I needed to know about breakin in a meer lined calabash. He recommended that I load er up with English and smoke away. I initially reached for my favorite daily smoke, MM965, but as I did that old tin of Margate started calling out to me. So, I grabbed the tin, opened the lid and gently opened up the beautiful oily paper and proceeded to delicately take small pinches of that Esoterica goodness from the tin. After filling the bowl about 3/4 of the way full I grabbed my pipe lighter and gently coaxed a bed of embers onto the top. A gentle tamping and one re-light and we were sailin away into the night. Now I know I've sang the praises of this 5 year old tin of Margate, but I gotta tell ya, it was absolutely incredible tonight. Something about the tobacco being smoked in that meer bowl and through that delicate gourd, produced an experience that is all but impossible to communicate through mere words typed on a forum. I know now, that when I decide to reach for the 20 year old Penzance, sittin up on the shelf beside the Margate, exactly which pipe I'll be a usin.

Good pairing. I'm also happy to hear that the pipe performed well for you. I just may load my calabash today.
