I just finished this 3 part 45 minute series...qute remarkable.

I know that my remarks are somewhat redundant...
What is remarkable is that while Churchill was out of power during his "wilderness years", he wrote a masterful piece on the biography of his brilliant ancestor that fought off Loius the XIV's cmpaign of domination and suceeded mightily. The paralells between Louis XIV and Hitler informed Churchill's understanding of what laid ahead for Britain are striking, and in spite of his country's solidly pacifistic attitude still reeling the raw wounds of the first world war just 15 years earlier, it changed attitudes. This reality of history informed Churchill, and in turn as the books were distributed to key people in parlimentary power, and FDR on the other side of the pond, the scales were lifted from he eyes along with the way the Germans were crushing heir opponents. The timing of Churchills book, and the rise of the Nazi's is simply amazing.
The historian David Starkey narrates it, and Timothy West as the voice of Churchill are very well done. Great artwork along with descriptions of what they mean, along with great footage of the war make this a first rate documentary. I realize that this may be old hat to students of history, but this angle of what informed Churchill's mindset is new to me.
Not to be confused with the tv series "the first Chuchills" or "The churchills at war".

The Churchills is a 2012 documentary in three parts written and presented by David Starkey tells the story of two great war leaders Winston Churchill and his ancestor John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough and the striking similarities in their lives.
Starkey argues throughout that it was Winston's absorption in the 17th century that helped him to be the first to recognise the menace of a new European hegemony, warning Parliament about the Nazis before Hitler had even come to power.
