Good question, Mark. Most Americans associate English with latakia but that isn't necessarily so. At one time the British government established a sort on-f ourity law that dictated what could be used in English blends. Many did not contain latakia or Balkan leaf. It's been a long time debate and a worthy one. Very true. One example of this is MacBaren HH Old Dark Fired. In the notes section of this blend at TR.com this is stated: One of the most fascinating parts about this tobacco that will be sure to confuse a lot of American pipe smokers is that, despite the fact that HH Old Dark Fired contains zero latakia, Mac Baren still considers it an English because of the method used in its production, specifically the steam press. Cool and thanks for this Jim. I really like ODF but never considered it an English - Now I know.

I am rather fond of Smoker's Haven "Our Best Blend" Interesting. It is tinned by Germain. Rumor has it that it's Margate with which I disagree. Thoughts?

I've heard that SH Cognac is the same as Pembroke, but hadn't heard that about Margate. I wonder if they're all just existing Germain's blends relabelled. King Charles or 1820 is Exotique, maybe?

Probably my favorite tobacco family.
Admittedly, some of these are called Balkans, but they all kind fall into the same flavor spectrum, to me anyway.

I wonder if they're all just existing Germain's blends relabelled. King Charles or 1820 is Exotique, maybe? I was just curious. I've smoked a lot of Margate but only recently tried a tin of SH Our Best Blend and thought there was a difference? I've never had the pleasure of Krumble Kake but have seen it compared to Penzance. The description indicates they have similar profiles. I really enjoy King Charles, have a few tins in the cellar. It's a favorite. 1820 has become somewhat of a unicorn for me. I have a few tins in the cellar as well but haven't popped one in a while because I'm afraid we'll never see it again on this side of the pond. I also have three tins of SH Exotique but have never popped one. Description on the back of the tin lists it a mix of Virginia, Lat, Turkish and "extra rich." It's first on the list this fall. It sounds like one which will go well with Guinness, college football and would be great if it's similar to 1820.

As mentioned in another post I have 2 tins aging of King Charles, only tried a sample and was very good as well.

Frog Morton On The Town. Also, about 5 years ago, I bought some Old English from Tobacco Trader, and Proper English from Mars. Tried them, and liked them very much, but decided to jar them, where they've been ever since! Maybe this year!

Magnum Opus and McClelland Old Dog fly under the radar; however, both agree with my palate. Good smokes.

Bumping the great thread. Has anyone tried Hearth & Home, "Larry's Blend"? It has been quite awhile since I've smoked it, but it was a favorite of mine.

My favorite English blends are:
- Dunhill Nightcap, - Rattray Black Mallory, and - Peterson Old Dublin.
There are many others that I like too, but I've smoked the most of these three by far.

Peter Stokkebye Proper English. That's when I'm actually in the mood for an English, which is rarely.

I've only tried 2 English tobacco, and neither one really does please me. John Cotton Smyrna and Rattray's 3 Noggins. I assume it's the Latakia that's messing with me. It's like eating Indian food, there's so much spice I can't taste the food. But everyone on here knows I'm pretty much a barbarian in taste already.
