When I was a youngster about 10 years old..(Boy that was a long time ago.) a friend of grandpa's owned a private fish lake.He charged folks a buck a day to fish as long as they didn't keep any fish.If you wanted to keep fish you had to pay for them.Grandpa took me fishing with him a lot when school was out ..We got to fish for free..The fella who owned the lake ran a snack shop and grandpa loved hot dogs.He would get us a hot dog and a drink. When he finished that he would get out his pipe..Here's the odd part of this little tale. Some times he would stick a cigar in the bowl cut it off even with the top and light up.Other times he would put his pipe bowl in a pouch of Prince Albert and fill it with just his thumb. I've tried this over the years with no success. I've yet to figure out how he did it..Any of you seen such goings on? ...Grandpa's pipe was a yellow Bowl.He told me that he paid 3 bucks for it.

That's a great recollection of your Grandpa. My dad used to fill a pipe with his thumb; he'd stick his pipe in the pouch of SWR and fill it using his thumb. He never used a pipe tool.

The "Codger Scoop" ... my preferred method as well!

Seems like 'The Codger Scoop' as cobguy put it, would be effective with those basic, dry burley blends. Cool story. Was the pipe a Grabow Color maybe?

...Many times I do the same...especially with a pouch tobacco...over the years, one can tell exactly how firm to tamp with your thumb no matter how much you fill the bowl...

So long as both ends of the cigar are clipped, you should have no problem.

haebar uses pipes to finish cigar nubs, as to the scoop, I use my index finger like John. Practice, you'll learn to feel the proper pack.

Yeah! Codger scoop! Since I fill my pipes most of the time from the pouch, it's the index finger for me. Scoop and light. Easy as pie.

Although i am not a Grandpa by any stretch....... my most heard comment is my grandpa smoked a pipe...... I was delivering copiers to a company in Tempe Az, and an old semi-retired guy from New York that dressed as he was still in the seventies with the gold chain and top three buttons of his shirt opened... think Paulie Wanuts from the Soprano's, with the same personality.
A drop dead gorgeous woman from the office came out to have a smoke while we were both chatting it up on the dock. The woman said "Oh...you smoke a pipe! My fondest memory is that of me sitting on my grandpa's lap while he smoked his pipe" Without batting an eye, yeah he said it....'honey, I am sure that you can sit on his lap right now, he has the pipe" She had a flicker of a grin, I didn't say a thing... My grandpa on the left:

My maternal grandfather immigrated to the US from Switzerland. He joined the US Army to earn his citizenship and went to Mexico to chase bandits and to fight in France in World War I. He worked as the maintenance man for an office building. Unfortunately, he passed away several years before I was born. In almost every picture of him, he has a pipe in his mouth. AFAIK, none of his pipes survived as family heirlooms. :-( However, I do have a Velvet can which was in his workshop area in my Gramma's basement. Here are a couple pics of him from the late 1940s:

Looks like asbestos shingles on the house. That's actually an outbuilding on my Great-Uncle and Great-Aunt's farm, but, as I recall, their house was also like that.

Looks like asbestos shingles on the house. Hopefully he wasn't smoking an asbestos pipe! I can imagine that before they knew of the hazards, it seemed like a great idea. Cool pics of your grandpa!

Interesting read. When I started smoking a pipe, every pipesmoker I knew filled with their thumbs from the pouch. It's not that difficult as you get to know how to pack different types of tobacco. And I don't really think it's got anything to do with Frank's Method. Everybody just did it that way.

I agree. back in the sixties, my uncle Earl loaded his pipe that way...pretty sure that pre-dated a guy name Frank on the internet.

I tried it and it didn't pack the bowl as easy as if using the index finger.
