Cornell & Diehl does it again with their new Small Batch Project. Great concept and in line with what C&D has always been known for, small batch blending. From it's inception when Craig & Patty Tarler started the company, C&D has been focused on providing top quality pipe tobacco, made by hand one tin at a time. C&D has grown into a formidable player in the pipe tobacco market and with it's merger with Laudisi, has further expanded its reach. Check out this video of C&D Head Blender, Jeremy Reeves as he talks about the new project from on of our favorite blending houses.
Anyone intend to try any of these small batch limited runs?

Heh - another ploy to invoke TAD. That and the free-shipping-for-$100 (or 99) suck me in, every time.

I watched the video that their blender appears in. I take "small batch" to mean a limited number of tins. This sounds like a beta test for new blends, which is OK but I guess I'm missing the point they're trying to make. I suppose they are throwing things at the wall and waiting to see what sticks. I always thought of them as a small batch operation while Craig was running things.

I think that John is spot on....I think "small batch" equals premum price and there are already some phenomenal blends that can be had buying bulk, far cheaper...which is my cellaring stategy these days. Not to say tins don't have their place....I have been smoking war horse all week, and I can relate to Gollum now....

I agree with John. I have always considered C&D small batch of sorts, though this is taking it a bit further. I think it's a cool concept, and with Laudisi behind them, they have a good chance of making it a really unique offering.
Can't beat this for testing out new shite either. Good way to tell what will work without spending a fortune.

I love Cornell & Diehl's pipe-tobaccos, but every time I see a picture of Jeremy Reeves I am reminded of Mark Smith (the fellow on the right in the image below) whose visage was featured on the Smith Brother's Cough Drop package alongside his brother Trade.

LMAO. Can't say I ever made that connection before, but I do now. I hope I don't start coughing subconsciously if I see him at any of the pipe shows.

I don't have anything against C&D, but "we make our blends one tin at a time"? What does that even mean? 2oz batches? Smells like marketing bull.

I don't know that anything they make is done in such a small batch as being only 2 oz. of tobacco. They did however, used to produce as needed and kept no running stock when they were in their old location. I would suspect they might get some pretty small orders. Granted, the operation is much different than it was, so none of that may be relevant anymore.

I don't know how they operate today but back when the Tarler's were running things in NC they would do a tin at a time for orders. I know because I used to have my B&M order some pretty obscure blends and sure enough they would hand pack a tin and ship it off. The little guy was their stock in trade and that lead to a strong following by many of us.

I'm always up for something experimental, but the down side is knowing if the blend is the cats pajamas (to me) and the public is lukewarm, then it's going to be a fond memory when my tins are gone. I don't do Latakia but I'm interested in what C&D will offer in future small batches.

I suppose they are throwing things at the wall and waiting to see what sticks. This has been their policy for some time, but they now have the "small batch" designation for blends that might be canceled, instead of putting them out under the C&D label and having people wonder why they've gone away.

I listened to the Country Squire podcast that JD and Beau had with Jeremy Reeves at the Chicago pipe show....they discussed the latest small batch called "the Beast"...the stuff sounded intriguing, and as I listened, I couldn't hardly wait to get home so I could order some. By the end of the podcast however, they said that 440 tins sold out in 2? hours the day they were released, and 200 sold out in about the same time at the Chicago pipe show..the rest were sent to tobacco shops...all 777 tins are gone...bummer. www.cornellanddiehl.com/the-latest-details.cfm?id=43I am guessing that with the new FDA regulations, these small batch runs will not be economically feasible....bastards.
