IS there a way to get a sample of all the different types of tobaccos (heavy Virginias, heavy Burley, English, Orientals, Aromatics, etc)? I'd like to try a full range and see what hits, ya know?

Buy one ounce of each type from SmokingPipes would be my suggestion. I've got a couple categories I could send you.
for example
I don't know what a "Heavy Virginia" would be, but can give you an example of "Best in Class" types in the category.
Buy 1 ounce of each of these.
Virginia: McClelland Virginias are some of the best and I'd say get some bulk McClelland #2010 Virginia Flake, or one of their aged/matured Virginias as well like #27, but #27 is only in tin. Still well worth getting one of those excellent tins.
Burley or heavy stronger burley: Cornell & Diehl Haunted Bookshop, Old Joe Krantz, Shandygaff (Shandygaff will act as a strong burley that is also got a lot of oriental and some perique in it.)
Oriental is hard to nail one down for ya, but Shandygaff is a good strong white burley and full of Oriental leaf too
Too many English but there are tons of good ones, and tons that are not well balanced so that's a bit difficult based on taste preferences.
A couple really good cheap bulk English blends I'd mention; Lane Medal of Valor, Newminster English Orient is a really good one with more Oriental leaf for an excellent price. Many good English are either tinned or harder to get. GLP makes a lot in tins that are superb.
There are nice Balkans and English in bulk, though. More English smokers could chime in.
There are a thousand aromatics so that's also hard to use one sample as a basis to say "THAT'S an aromatic!"
I'd say get some Edward G Robinson, Sutliff Edgeworth Ready Rubbed match blend.
PM me your address and I could send you some burley's and each of the others I've mentioned.

Many online retailers offer sample pacages for little money. 4noggins come to mind and I believe that P&C and SP do the same. A phone call to any one of them should get you going.

I have some advice on sampling tobacco. Try a few bowls in a few different pipes before you decide you like/dislike a blend.

Like others have said go to Smoking pipes or to P&C and get ounces of the ones that appeal to you. Be sure to read the description and the reviews they will also help you.

Be warned to take reviews with a grain of salt. People who don't like strong tobaccos or want it full of toppings whine about the blend but it's superlative. People also whine about other C&D burley and claim "It just tastes like tobacco!" Or, it just tastes like a cigarette! Well, cigarettes are mostly Burley tobacco, to the genius that says something that smart! you have to just try tobaccos to see what YOU think. As Jim told me on the phone last night, every tobacco out there is someone's favorite. If you like nicotine strong full flavored Burley then you'll love all the C&D and Bob Runowski perfections. If you don't, you won't. |

Load a box with tobacco samples and other tobacciana and send it to first person on list. Then second person takes from box and adds to it and sends it on ... and so on. Just a general idea. |

Their new system overhaul has probably enabled them to do targeted emails with promos that can't be shared. I call it discrimination! |
