MY refrigerator has one of those things where you can get ice or water in the door.Yesterday my ice maker stopped making ice.I called a friend who repairs and sells used appliances and asked him how much it would cost to get it fixed. He said at least $400.He told me to see him and we could talk about it.Last night I was really stressed. It was hard for me to relax and smoke a pipe. All I could think about was something else to take my money.Today I went to his shop.He told me that it could be just that my filter was clogged up and shut off the water flow to the ice maker.$50 far a new filter.Expensive I thought but a big savings if it works..It Did..The water flow has vastly improved and the ice maker is kicking out ice...If you run into this situation some time down the road check your filter,,It could save you a bunch of tobacco money.

Good advice, and it sure beats the initial prognosis...and not having ice for the tea on hand in North Carolina, just ain't right!
Glad it worked out for you Larry.
An appliance repair buddy has told me that the regulations keep pushing energy efficiency at the point that simple appliance are more complex than necessary, and therefore more unreliable. In 2006,after the initial warranty expired, my icemaker conked out, had I not had an extended warranty it would have costed me 800 bones.

I just shut our ice maker off rather than look into it. Will never buy a fridge with one again. To think, 20 years having to make our own ice. I feel so stupid... nah

Our ice maker kicked the bucket about 2 months after we moved into our house. Just wouldn't make ice... water flow was fine. Luckily we had a home warranty. $100 deductible and they came out, looked at it and said the whole unit had to be replaced. They ordered the parts and came back a week later to install. Would have been about a $400-500 repair, but thanks to the warranty, only $100.
Still more than I would have preferred to pay, but was well worth it.

Going back to cracking trays of ice cubes and refilling them would suck.
I have a supply line from the reverse osmosis tank fridge filter isn't needed, so when my filter minder on the fridge door illuminates, I just reset it..... My Maytag came with a plug to cap off the filter housing, I am glad they did, I think the filters are 60 to 70 bucks.

Going back to cracking trays of ice cubes and refilling them would suck LOL Charlie. My old man (RIP) would get seriously POed at me or my sisters if any of us used ice without filling up the trays. If anybody wanted to have a bad day, just toss a couple unfilled ice cube trays back in the freezer and wait. Same with tea. Drinking the last glass from the gallon jar in the fridge and not putting a fresh batch on the stove was grounds for punishment too. The horror of it all! How did we possibly survive? After completely highjacking the thread. many thanks for this info - Good to know.

my in-laws ice maker went out. instead of making ice the old fashioned way, they drive across town and get ice from our ice maker. one day not too long ago, my wife and I had used all the ice in the bin and they got mad because they "had to go buy ice". they didn't think it was funny when I told them I'd share my grandmas recipe for her award winning ice cubes.

Yeah, I clearly remember my brother cracking the ice he wanted and leaving a single cube in the tray so he didn't have to refill it...unfortunately for him, our dad wasn't Fred Macmurray type of guy more like "the gunny"...that got sorted out quickly.

For years I've just used gallon jugs and an ice pick.Every fridge I have had with an ice maker leaked after about a month. Also,I've helped my BIL replace four ice makers in three fridges in the last five years, with one of them already not working. My way, I get to let off some stress by stabbing something.(Myself only once)

Never had a refrigerator with even an ice maker much less one with a drink and ice dispenser and don't want one. That's just one of the problem nowadays, they put all this useless crap on things that don't have the life span of a fart and hope you just can't live without it and pay them to fix it or purchase a new one. And it's making Americans fricken LAZY SLOUCHES, no thank you! I'm happy with having to open the frig door to get a cold drink sirs!

Our condo fridge didn't have any ice maker in it, but after 3 months of my struggling ice trays with very little hand strength to work with, I bought an ice maker off EBay for $30.00. Life is better now, and I am a product of the spoiled American lifestyle I was raised in.

Considering it's like $2 a bag at the beer distributor, they pay for themselves in a matter of months.

No room in the Fifth Wheel for such a thing as a ice maker. Replaced with Silicone ice trays that make one inch square cubes. Most problems with ice and water dispensing can be repaired with one of the ten dollar wonders.

Hey! I resemble that remark, but I am a respectable lazy slouch!
FWIW, Ron foregoes modern conveniences like pipe cleaners, but one of these days that rooster in his back yard is going to figure that last plucked tail feather is the last one he gets.😉

I grew up with ice trays,(once we got a freezer). I remember getting ice from the ice house before that. My mom never had a ice maker. Most of the last 45 years I have had an ice maker. Our current refrigerator's ice maker quit several times ago and we have been buying ice for at least 6 years before going to ice trays. That caused the above issues with ice tray maintenance. We finally br down and got the fridge fixed. $175 and we'll wort it.

Haven't seen one for sale for years. At DAYTONA they sell the loopiest ice, cylinders with a hold on the center, absolute garbage, and I thought of freezing gallons of water then couldn't remember seeing an ice pick for decades. Yet you have one hmph!

I use an ice pick as well (bought at thrift shop). For containers I use large size Cool Whip tubs. Keep 2 going and just part of my summer iced tea routine to keep a bag filled & ready. The 'bergs' are large and don't need constant refreshing.
