Yes I know some of Russ Ouelette's matches are just as good or better then the ones they are based on. But all the time people are looking for a blend matching something that is easy to get or currently available. All I can think of is price or they want in bulk.

Most of the match blends are of discontinued blends. The only matches I can think of that are of tobaccos still in production are "Early AM pipe" or "Evening Pipe" match blends for Dunhill EMP and Nightcap. Those would be for cost because the actual Dunhill brand is also sold in bulk. What other match blends are out there for Brand names still in production? Oh, I'd forgotten about the Prince Andrew and Chatham Manor.

Yo dave
Lower price is not a bad reason for a new product. That would be meaningful to puffers trying to get it done on a budget. FWIW, the great RussO produced a BB1938 Match, when Dunhill was dithering on naming its reintroduction of Baby's Bottom. The Lehigh Valley Pipe Club pretty much unanimously agreed that Russ's Match was superior to the Dunhill.

Oh, I'd forgotten about the Prince Andrew and Chatham Manor. The Dunhill blends were "matched" some years ago based on a reports that the blends were no longer going to be sold in the USA, so Sutliff (then known as "Altadis") made matches to cover the anticipated loss of Dunhill products. For the most part, Match blends were invented when a blend was discontinued in this country or entirely from the marketplace. In the case of Carter Hall and Prince Albert, I suppose they figured they should match them in case they disappeared as well. I consider that a wise strategy. As I believe these particular match blends are better than the originals, I think the customer wins out in this case.

Also aren't the match blends free of the dreaded pg? I know thats the only thing that turns me from carter hall, the chemical taste after 2 or 3 bowls in the truck pipe.

Pg is propylene glycol, used to keep tobacco humidified for longer. It's harmless but is present in many otcs and aros.
