I heard from a mutual friend that a college buddy of ours passed away. I was looking through the obits and saw a picture of a gentlemen with a pipe in his mouth that had also recently passed. My first thought: I wonder if I should contact the family or go to the funeral and ask them if they will sell me his pipe stuff.

How about a Card expressing condolences and a small note casually asking about his pipe stuff. Nothing too strong, all in good taste.

Look both ways when backing out of the driveway. Observe the speed limit. Why are you still here?

Edit: I confused the buddy with the other fellow on the obit column...But, I guess he could be a pretend friend!😜

As long as you don't hit on anyone at the funeral, asking about his pipes should be fine.

The first thing you need to do is tell her that you have PAD and that you've succumbed to cruising funeral homes for a quick score... I'm sure she'll understand.. Actually, in all seriousness.. You could go to the viewing and strike up a casual conversation with her and explain the bond you feel with a fellow pipe smoker, a diminishing breed. Then ask about his pipes and offer to take (or pay) them, assuring her that his memory will live on through his pipes.

I think I will send a card just to redeem myself (good call Brad). I would probably never act on my thoughts but it just struck me as somewhat strange that my first thought was of pipes. And yes, I don't think I made myself clear, it wasn't my old friends photo it was just a strangers photo that showed him with a pipe.

Just my opinion but, I wouldn't even approach them on it. It's not at all the proper thing to do.....unless one is a Vulture of course.

I think a straight forward approach would be best after a tasteful amount of time has passed. Most family members are realistic about death when it is a person who died under natural circumstances at a ripe age. And I am sure an offer on some old pipes would help a little with funeral costs.
We did just talk about this a few days ago. How everyone carries a smart phone so it is hard to get a deal on things. Not to mention people tend to label things as antiques and instantly assume they are as valuable as Spanish doubloons... For example: My friend and his father know I'm into pipe smoking and tried bragging-up some valuable 'antique' pipes they had of their father's/grandfather's estate. One was supposedly Ivory- I knew it was Meerschaum before seeing it. haha And the 'antiques' were a couple of Grabows. I dint give them $ value on them because I wanted them to continue cherishing them as heirlooms. Sad how that would ruin the attachment for some people. I wish I had a pipe of my grandfather's.

I would send a card as an appreciation of a BOTL, if they contact you about his pipes then make an offer.

If you do anything at all, follow Baboo's advice. Enquire much later.

they will most likely have a yard sale at some point, keep watching the newspaper for it to be listed But, if pipes were part of his identity (and I suspect they were since they used that photo) his pipes will probably be divided up amongst kids and grandkids as momentos, and hopefully foster a new generation of pipe smokers.

My grandfather only had one pipe. When he died I really wanted that pipe.I asked all of my relatives if they had it as none of them were pipe smokers. They all said no.I still don't know what happened to it.I definitely think one of them got it and was less than honest with me.

Yeah with any luck it will be (or should I say, was 😀) a collection of common Dr. Grabow pipes.😁

Send condolences now, revisit sometime later with a sensitive tactful inquiry. +1 I have mixed feelings, but if you must ,this seems the best idea...let her know that as a piper we are "brothers of the briar" and as such we feel a common loss whenever a piper passes...only if that is your real feeling.
I've often thought we need a pipe and tobacco "clearing-house" for times like these...that way those left behind could ship such items off to be sold off at a fair price , and not sell off a lifetime of collecting for pennies at some damn yardsale.

Worse yet... Thinking that there is no value and donating them to a thrift store that concludes the same and tosses them in a dumpster. Pretty sure that happens with regularity. Most people would not think twice about re-using silverware in a diner after it had been sanitized, but sticking a used pipe in one's mouth....UNTHINKABLE!
