Even though I have 4 welding helmets my wife still went out and some bought cheap "solar eclipse glasses". After some conversation, she's going to return them. I remember the really cool total solar eclipse of 1970. Back then you just squinted and looked up.. no big deal.

I have friends that are traveling out to be in the direct path. Making a whole vacation around it. I hope it's not cloudy that day.
They say we should have about 80% obscured here in Philly, so I suspect there will be a lot of people outside looking when it comes by.

My step-son and some of his friends are heading to Wyoming to catch this one. I'll be doing the normal Monday routine ... time to make the donuts ...

Good link Charlie. Hop-town KY ground zero, 100%. People from all over the planet have had everything there booked for many moons. Supposed to be approximately 90% in Derby City. Picking up some user friendly glasses this week to watch the show.

The totality passes directly over Salem, Oregon and I am definitely looking forward to seeing my first total eclipse of the sun. All of my immediate and some extended family/friends are coming to Salem to see it. I am stocking up on supplies as there expected to be 500,000 extra people in Salem, Oregon alone. I have plenty of beer and tobacco, so I should be good.

The arc that it is travelling basically provides the maximum viewing area across the continent.

Seen one Solar Eclipse, seen them all.
Just kidding.
I do not know how visible it will be on the NM border with CO but I will be ready with a burnt offering when the Sun God makes his move. Looking at the map which Trailboss kindly provided, appears it will be about 80 per cent here on the 37th parallel.
Welding helmet at the ready.

I have seen several, including the total over Houston in 1984. I was working in printing at the time so I put together bundles of neutral density and color filters. Plus I exposed some film to a 180 density for my coworkers. It is amazing how bright the sun is. I spent the whole day screwing around for myself and I ended up using a red+green +blue plus 90 neutral density for my viewing. About $350 worth of filters, but you could look at the sun all day. It was pretty impressive. It didn't last long but the thing I remember is the chill in the air from around 30% to 30%.I don't think I will travel to see it again. Mostly bummed because I wasn't able to see Halley's Comet 2 years later.
I should note that this was an Annular eclipse, not total, but most of the Sun was covered with just the small ring around the edge.

Just learned that a welding helmet or glasses need to be "Shade 14" in order to be safe for solar viewing. My Radnor helmet is "Shade 11". So, I guess it is the pinhole and white paper for me or I could just ignore it.

Now there are Optometrist popping up on the web saying that looking at it for more than two seconds will damage your eyes. Nothing is sacred anymore, as everything in the Universe is harmful. Guess what, on a fine enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone is still Zero.

the safest way is to wear a box on one's head with a pinhole at one end and a white paper taped on the inside of the opposite. There are some things I just will not do and this is one of them.

Not much of an event here. Cloud cover. Did get a glimpse through a welding helmet. Not much darker than a dense cloudy day. About 80 per cent cover I read. The remaining 20 per cent was plenty bright for normal functioning.

The remaining 20 per cent was plenty bright for normal functioning. Pretty much how it played out in Phoenix....like having weak sunglasses on. My local channel did a lousy job covering it, that was why I looked at NASA.....some of the images were pretty cool, people with high dollar rigs got some neat pictures of the corona and solar flares.

My cousin runs an industrial gas supply company in Kansas...he saw what was coming a few months ago and posted a sign:
Any welding lenses, and hoods bought between todays date_____ and (August 21st) will get store credit, receipt required for returns.
It really thinned the herd of prospective buyers.
