My wife and I drove from SW Michigan with a goal of reaching Portland, TN to be in the middle of the total eclipse path. Our plan collapsed after we passed Louisville, KY. The traffic started to get real heavy and slower due to other eclipse tourists. To get from Louisville to Elizabethtown, KY (about 45 miles) took us 2 hours on I-65. We ended up watching the eclipse in Elizabethtown where they had 97.6% coverage. We would have been in the edge of total coverage if we could have made it about another 60 miles to Bowling Green, KY. On the bright side, we got home earlier than expected.
I'm glad that the 2024 eclipse will be much closer to us.

My cousin runs an industrial gas supply company in Kansas...he saw what was coming a few months ago and posted a sign: Any welding lenses, and hoods bought between todays date_____ and (August 21st) will get store credit, receipt required for returns. It really thinned the herd of prospective buyers. Dang blasted customers! They always want something. LOL. Glad he was able to out maneuver a flood of returns.

Well, I have to say that the total eclipse is absolutely nothing like a partial at any level. Thankfully, the sky was absolutely 100% clear in Salem, Oregon on the 21st of August.
In short: It was the most amazing thing I have ever seen. The white "rays" coming off the sun are unbelievable! It becomes sunset in all directions at totality, and Venus was easily seen in the middle of the sky. It is something you need to experience if you have never seen a total eclipse of the sun.
The "mood" leading up to, and just before the totality is palpable all around you, and it's like a door opening, letting you know that there is a fined tuned focus put upon everyone in the path of totality. I was shaking physically as a result after the totality passed. I cannot describe it very well, you need to experience it. I feel very blessed to have been in the path.
