Just recently started smoking a pipe , hopefully in an effort to quit cigerettes. Any advice for a new pipe smoker?

Welcome! Only advice is to keep at it ... grab a few MM Cobs and a few Burley based blends and practice. Pay attention to how wet the tobacco is: shouldn't stay clumped together when pinched Watch how tightly you pack the pipe: many videos online to give you ideas but you'll find your own over time Don't smoke too fast: very common mistake especially coming off cigs ... slow and easy as she goes Good luck and tell us a little more about yourself!

welcome from Charleston, WV! cobs are great to start out with, a Missouri Meerschaum Legend was my first pipe, and I'm still quite fond of them. My favorite place to get them is Aristocob.com

Welcome to the Patch! Good luck on quitting the cigs, I was able to thanks to taking up the pipe. It took me about a year to put them down, gradually smoking less cigs & more pipes. I was making my own & found it was easier to cut down by making less. I found having a back up tobacco that gets me through helps a lot too. I enjoy smoking Five Brothers in a small cob a whole lot more than smoking a cig, it's what helped get me past the hump & dump them for good. As for advice take it slow when puffing, always test the draw after packing & don't worry about relights. Have fun & enjoy!

Welcome aboard! Try different pipe and tobacco combos. You will find some stuff you love and stuff you can't stand. Some blends grow on you or strike you differently when repeated.

Welcome from Bethlehem, Pa. My advice is to come here as often as you can and ask as many questions as you like. You'll be fine.

Greetings and Welcome from Washington State. When you get to the point that you resent cigarettes interfering with your pipe , the battle will be won. Much success.

Yo shtro
Welcome from Chester County. Your best bet, if you are within range of Philly or Bethlehem, is to visit the pipe clubs (Christopher Morley's in Center City and Lehigh Valley PC in Bethlehem). You can get hands-on training - beats YouTubes every time. Plus the feedback is interactive, real time and no batteries required.

Welcome. Depending on how bad your cigarette addiction is, you might want to start with some high-nicotine blends to make sure pipes will scratch that itch. Between the great flavors and the nic, you'll be off the cigs in no time.

Welcome to The Briar Patch! Many of us have walked the road you are traveling in terms of getting off cigarettes using a pipe. I would second the suggestion made earlier to get some tobaccos that are strong in terms of nicotine like Dunhill's Royal Yacht, any of the Gawith & Hoggarth ropes, or G&H Dark Birds Eye or Kendal Kentucky. Don't inhale the pipe smoke, you will get satisfaction through other means.
