Yes, that is correct. Panel pipes have a flat edge(or edges) on their sides. If you look in the For Sale section of the forum, you'll find a Molina pipe for sale, which should give you a good idea of a panel pipe can look like.

Welcome, from Northeast Indiana. Cobs are great for cheap pipes to determine if you're going to stick with it. A lot of hobbyists don't like cobs, but smokers tend to like cobs. You can smoke one all day and not worry about your briar. Also, I did not buy cobs first, but got my first cob maybe a few months into my smoking. I started out with an MM hardwood pipe and pretty quickly bought my first briar.
Browse and ask away.
I would suggest a few easy to smoke tobaccos for the first few months.
Blends like Prince Albert, Cornell & Diehl Yorktown, Cornell & Diehl Haunted Bookshop.

Welcome from Central New Jersey! Cobs are great pipes to start out with. Wealth of information on a site like this. www.tobaccoreviews.com/ is a good place to get to know about tobaccos before you buy them. There are certain reviewers on that site that have amazing palates and very descriptive verbiage. One stalwart is very prolific on bot sites. Puff slowly and bring a lot of matches or a filled lighter to the table. Enjoy!
