Today was the community yard and my goal was to go find pipe stuff. This little old lady that lives behind me is always working on some project or another and last night I peeked in to see what she had going up for sale..nothing caught my eye and this morning before we left I didn't even pop back in for a second look. Well I should have because after the family was done yard selling we all stopped and saw how much she had sold and congratulated her for a great day. I asked her to keep an eye out for any tobacco jars or pipe stands and she and her daughter in law both groaned..Here her daughter in - law brought to the sale a "PIPE" Pipe Stand..It was a pipe stand carved to look like a pipe and had six spaces for pipe pipes on the stem and the bowl of the pipe was a tobacco jar! Oh and it included six pipes!!!! UGGHHHHH!!!! Neither of them knew I would want pipes so I wasn't offered first crack at the stand..but the daughter-in-law said that stand was from a family member and thinks there may be more pipes available so maybe tomorrow she will knock on my door with a handfull of pipes to sell!

That's exactly like having someone telling you that they are going to give you something when they die. That pretty much guarantees that you won't get it, as the relatives will keep it.

My brother always seemed to snag the deals...I finally figured it out after a friend had the deal of the century..ask leading questions.
He was at a garage sale in KC, and noticed part of what appeared to be a Nazi flag peeking out from a box on rafter shelves. "Do you have any military stuff" he asked. It was like a switch was flipped and the guy started pulling out crates of stuff that he had no use for...an M1 Garand, a 1911 Colt made in 1911 along with his grandfathers miltary holster, German luger, and it just goes on from there. The guy's grandfather was in both world wars was instrumental in creating the American legion, and started a furniture chain of stores. Many other guns ceremonial swords, etc... all with provenance. We are talking museum quality find.
"I will take $1,000.00 for all of it"
My friend said that he told the guy that this was a great bargain, but the guy insisted that he had no use for it. He wasn't scraping by, he had a beautiful house, so it wasn't like the guy was going to starve.
Easily worth ten times the amount...speaking up can really open some opportunities.

as the relatives will keep it. LoL! Yeah I ended up with a stinky box of Grandpa's smoked out and broken Medico's Yello-bowl's and Kaywoodie's! I have bought a couple of truly estate pipes that were rare gems that were sold for the families by eBay storefront sellers. One was a prize Castello that I didn't know existed. I was so excited to "win" it I drove 75 mile through a blizzard to pick it up at the eBay storefront in suburban Milwaukee, very close to were we held our MAPS pipe show for years to claim it. The seller showed me the other pipes from the family and they were all very high end and in perfect shape that had been sitting in a drawer since dad passed away and now mom left the house 20 years on. They had no idea there was a Market for used pipes.
