I have two types of Tabac-Manil, one being Pure Semois, the other, I'mtoolazytolookupname. I did some searching on how to cellar this, but the answers didn't seem to fit the issues. They both came bone, tumbleweed dry. Should I still let it air before lighting up? Now for cellaring: Any aging would be helped with moisture. I can't imagine much getting done in a dry atmosphere. Should I add water? billyklubb I am counting on you, knowing you smoke this. If there is anything else I need to know, please feel free to lecture me all you want. I CAN TAKE IT, MAN!

This question comes up fairly often. No tobacco should ever be smoked bone dry. Vincent Manil is a clever guy. He has no way from preventing his tobacco from drying out due to his using only a foil wrapper so he says it should be smoked dry. BS! Learn how to rehydrate your tobacco. It is more art than science. I use a small spray bottle with distilled water. You can buy a moisture meter (they are very cheap on Ebay) or just learn to do it they way most tobacco growers do. Squeeze a handful of tobacco. If it remains in a little ball for more than a few seconds, it is too wet. If it immediately expands, it is too dry. If it releases its form over about 2-5 secs or so, it is just right.

I have some of this blend and I smoked as is (DRY) and it was a fine smoke. I wouldn't worry about the moisture level or the lack of.

Breathe moisture into a pipeful cupped in your hand is all it needs. I smoke it dry as is, but that's me.

I smoke it dry. I've tried re-hydrating tobacco and found nothing but flavor loss. with Semois, unlike many other tobaccos, pack tighter than you think you need. 5 Brothers is the same way. I would not add water for aging. take some Semois and re-hydrate it. smoke that. then eat an apple to reset your taster. now smoke a bowl of it dry. you will notice a difference. I'd say make up your mind from there.

Not all pipe tobaccos are necessarily sold with intent to be aged and/or cellared. Manil's Semois is meant to be consumed sooner rather than later seems to me. I have stored several unopened packs for years, and finally upon opening and smoking find it to be completely fresh and unchanged, just as I would want it. If not one's cup of tea, as it were, there are myriad others from which to choose. As suggested above, breathe into a cupped palmful to introduce moisture to the extent desired.

Not all tobacco and blends age well. Jarring with it packed tight with very little to no head room would be the way to go.

I have tried it bone dry as it comes and slightly hydrated. I could not really tell a difference in taste, but I don't have the most sensitive palate. It burns and smokes wonderfully well when dry, so that would be my recommendation.

Thanks all. I actually packed two jars tight, so I guess I did that right. Won't worry about cellaring and will smoke it as it comes. I may have packed my pipe too loosely first go around.

All good advice in this thread. True: Bone dry, packed tight. Works better for me in small bowls as well.

It's good stuff. All three that are sold are the same tobacco just in different cuts. La Brumeuse (Thick) Reserve du Patron (Medium) and Le Petit Robin (thin). I don't notice a difference in taste.
