Got a Match? Yeah...your breath and a buffalo fart says the old joke... I like using matches, but the strike anywhere ones I have found have been scarce and the diamond brand are disappointing as they constantly break and the ignition quality sucks also...rather than re-invent the wheel on trying my own hand on reviews I saw this article, and I ordered a few boxes from Amazon of the Brazilian made UCO matches and they get the best reviews on Amazon. www.chainsawjournal.com/top-4-strike-anywhere-matches/They appear to be much more inexpensive on the manufacturers website, and if I like them I will probably buy a case...next to the "buy now" tab, you can "find a retailer near you" which there are many near me. After I get them I will give my impression and post the costs of buying locally vs. having them shipped. Strike anywhere matches are regulated as hazmat so they cannot go via airlines so that may be a factor in shipping costs. ucogear.com/strike-anywhere-matches.html

I love matches. The problem is they are just not practical when out and about for me. I default to a Bic.
I remember the real strike anywhere that my Grandmother used to have. Been a long time since I have seen those sitting around a kitchen.

Matches ... the flame I love to hate. While trying to remain loyal to my little, wooden friends I find myself reaching for the Bic more and more. Smoking outside 90% of the time is the biggest factor, I think.

I use matches for my first light and then go to my Zippo pipe lighter/

Went to Texas to see my son, and there the HEB Stores carry the cactus Quill matches, supposed to be very good for pipes. Well after 3 days of passing them up because we had to go see this and that I never got my matches. Damn these young people in a hurry to do nothing. They don't smell the roses anymore.

Nor the tobacco!

Match guy here. I use either the Diamond or store brand kitchen matches and always find some duds or ones the snap apart upon striking. I've learned how to angle the match for the best flame without scorching the pipe rim or for re-lights. Mastering the art of using a match in a wind still escapes me, though. Sometimes my own breath will blow out a match while lighting up! When I was in the Navy, I knew guys who could light a match and keep it lit long enough to light a cigarette in a good head wind.

I love using matches as well..it adds to the relaxation of pipe smoking..the sound of a match sizzling and the smell of it right before it flames up...I close my eyes and have an imaginary first puff on my pipe waiting for the match to go into full bloom before I toast the top of my bowl.

I get the Diamond strike anywhere locally at a hardware store. Buck and some change per box.

I remember when Blue Diamond matches where made to strike anywhere, even struck'em on my jeans but, since it seems most parents don't want to or don't know how to parent there children properly corporate America has to do it for them by making them safer yet more useless. As some have said already matches aren't ideal for outside use for me and even though I hate those little plastic lighters I find myself using Bic's instead of scorching expensive pipe rims with my Zippo's. And you'll not see me spend several hundred dollars on a fancy shmancy lighter I'll drop and mar or loose. While the match is a fine implement to use for lighting your pipe indoors (if your careful) I'm afraid there'll be a time when they disappear all together.

When I lived in Minnesota for a short stint, I used kitchen matches that were "extra long" which allowed me to get the flame right where I wanted it. Now that I'm home in the Windy City, I just use my regular Bic which I use to light my cigarettes. I know people swear regular lighters affect the taste, but I haven't noticed a significant one.

I've got a Zikar Scribe, my dad got it for me, ran about 50 bucks, uses butane, soft flame, comes out the side. Works great, allows you to get a nice angle. I would love to be able to use matches, but my pipes are outdoor only, at least until the kiddos grow up and move out.

Bradley, remember I'm the guy that started the whole cactus match thing, and am here in Texas, so I just sent you a PM.

Well, I got the matches in, and they are the best I have seen in quite awhile, and it is pretty easy to get the Bing light to work. The match actually works pretty good in a breeze for me, the trick is to get it cupped while the sulphur is in the ignition phase...with a little practice, it really isn't all that hard. For truly windy weather, I will never be without the Zippo though, it truly lives up to the "windproof" claim compared to a bic. These matches are more sturdy than the Diamond brand by far, some of the ones I did break were from my practicing the Bing light, if I were to strike them on any surface, I seriously doubt they would break with reasonable pressure... at least to the degree of the Diamond brand. The trick to the bing light is to choke fairly high on the match stick at the second finger joint...and ya gotta have some nail. Admittedly, I have a way to go before I am as smooth as Bing. the best online price I have seen is at Academy sports for $1.99 per box of 250, for sales of $25.00 and above, free shipping...13 boxes will put you just over the threshhold...or a box of ammo will get you to $25 pdq. www.academy.com/shop/pdp/uco-strike-anywhere-matches-250-count?repChildCatid=3163536While at the park lighting my pipe with the Bing light, some teens thought it was pretty cool...it occured to me that they probably never saw a strike anywhere match.

Love that scene. Thanks for sharing Charlie. The match light and even the general "clench control" with that pipe shows that he was a true pipe smoker.

God I miss the old strike anywhere Swan Vestas, with the sandpaper on the side. You can still occasionally find the newer strike on box Swans, but they're not the same, not even close.

I drive a truck all night, and switched to the matches over my zippo or bic, certainly less cumbersome and easier to get an even light, as my view of the bowl is less obstructed...and with the softest of flame.
Darn good at the Bing light if I do say so myself! I haven't had any errant flaming sulfur, the head is pretty solid.

Whenever I get the flaming sulphur, it's stuck to my damn finger. Better than my cousin...He thought he was Jonny B. Bad...he would sit on the toilet, soread his legs and snap the wrist as he flicked his cig. The cherry busted off on the toilet seat and welded to his weasel. He invented the Wild Watusi dance after that.

A cople neat clips..in light of David Bowie's passing: Kinda reminded me of when Eddie Van Halen got together with Chet Atkins....two different worlds, amazing talent that complement each other.
And a CBC interview:
