Now we're finding out what blends you started with, what pipe did you start with? Do you still have it? This was my first. It was a black lightly rusticated H.I.S. bent Billiard. Unfortunately I killed it. I packed it too tight, smoked it way too hot and fast, and upon the advice of another that didn't know any better I scraped the chamber after every smoke. I burned a hole in it in no time. I learned better with my next pipe: a tan 1/4 bent blasted H.I.S. Billiard. I still have that one.

Savinelli Hercules Octagon..I didn't keep it too long.It was too big and heavy for someone just starting to smoke a pipe.

Yes, a cob that is sitting in a tub in the davecave. I was 14 and had read that Hef smoked a pipe and Mixture 79 so I figured I should to. After a week or so I graduated to a Dr G billiard and bought a fancy silver with black "onyx" Zippo. I still have them too.

Way back in high school it was a Grabow from the local drugstore. When I picked it back up it was a cob.

I have my first pipe that survived the learning curve, an mm bent legend with an amber stem. Paid 6.39 for it at rite aid. Along the same time I bought an his billiard that the tenon broke off the firt time I took it apart, and a kms? Oom paul that the whole stummel cracked from tenon along the bottom to the top of the bowl. The kms got returned for a grabow freehand and the his got tossed. Total investment in learning what not to buy $35.

My first pipe was my father's, who didn't stay with it long: a late 1950s smooth with etched grooves straight Willard long stem adjustomatic Canadian with a black vulcanite stem. The first one I bought, a couple weeks after I started back in 1974, was a smooth three quarter bend Dr. Grabow Omega with a black vulcanite stem. The Willard is not a good smoker, but I still occasionally smoke the Grabow, as I did earlier today. It's held up well, and does what it needs to do, having been smoked thousands and thousands of times.

The first pipe I bought was a straight prince with a light colored stain. I don't remember any markings and I paid about $30 for it. It had a balsa filter that I didn't mind at first. No one told me not to remove the stem while it was hot and I must have done it a number of times and it got very loose. I got rid of it because I liked my second pipe a lot better which I still have and smoke.

A small figural meer with a turk wearing a turban, and smoked it often on my SF to LA run back in the eighties. I bought it at the Tinderbox in Mt. View Ca., and an ounce of "North Sea", (rebranded Stokkebye nougat) every other week. Little did I know at the time that if one was going to smoke a single pipe, that is a good one to have.
I wish I still had it.

A Peterson Standard bent system pipe I picked up on at Shannon duty free for 73 Irish Pounds in 1984. It's still around here somewhere. Looking for it started this long and expensive path.

This is it. Bought it in September of 1980, in Boulder, Colorado. I remember thinking it was pricey at about $25. My first year at college. It is an X'd out second. I can't read who the maker is under the x's. Stem needs a buffing. Still smokes great. Tapered bowl is good for about a 20 minute smoke. This pipe and a gourd meerschaum calabash were my only two pipes for many years. I sold the calabash on eBay about 15 years ago. This one still gets smoked often.

Thanks LM. It is a light and comfortable pipe. The sandblast is pretty nice on it. I thought it was very Danish when I bought it. That appealed to me.

my first pipe was a MM Legend 5th Avenue bought at Rite Aid in Marlinton, WV. My choices were that or a Dr. Grabow for $40, lol. I developed PAD early on, because I only smoked it twice before I went to Rite Aid 5 miles from home and bought another MM Legend 5th Avenue, this time it was a bent stem. My first one was straight because that was all they had. The second one I charred the rim to hades learning how to use a lighter to light my pipe. I still have both but don't smoke them as I don't like the shape of the bowls, they are not comfortable in my hand. I discovered the Diplomat Apple and fell in love with that shape. Eventually I added Mark Twain and Country Gent. I hope to try a Rob Roy soon.
