I'm asking because I love Capstan- Blue, but I am not so much in love with the price. Any similar smokes for less?
Also, I'd love to hear of other matched or similar blends people have run across. For example, I have heard that Quiet Nights is similar to Penzance- witch is quite useful as the later is impossible to find.

Yo red
If'n you love Capstan Blue, you will like a bulk, Sutliff #507c Virginia Slices, which is a best buy in this genre. It's a bit lighter, but shares much of the same taste profile.
I'm getting to prefer Quiet Nights to Penzance. I prefer my PZ aged, but I'm finding more interesting complexity to Greg's magnificent crumble cake.

You may want to try some Newminster #400 or PS LTF in bulk too ... ages well and cost is low.
Agree with the QN's vs PZ ... also try Lancer Slices with some age.

If it's the grassy, alfalfa notes you prefer in Capstan Blue, I'd suggest C&D Exhausted Rooster. It's more affordable; however, it's also more full flavored to my tastes. About three months outside of the tin in a little flip top jar serves it well.
Quiet Nights is my favorite Penzance substitute. You might also try Hearth and Home 10 to Midnight. It's affordable, readily available and a worthy substitute in a meer.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I am a bit late in my responses as I had some friends I haven't seen since high school visiting for a few days. lestrout : Sutliff #507c Virginia Slices will certainly be added to my shopping list. Thanks, man! Darin : #400 or PS LTF in bulk Will also make the list. Thank you, sir! Penzaholic : Great little review, Marty. Certainly a must try by this point. Your vote goes double for obvious reasons. haha @10furlongs : C&D Exhausted Rooster sounds like a must try. The sweet, herbal, and almost lightly malty quality to Capstan is what I love most about it. I also find it has the perfect nic-kick for me. Just enough so to remind me to slow down and enjoy the tobacco rather than smoking like a slob. haha Thank you. Capstan is really just one favourite. I am not a cheapskate for better or worse and I do not not mind spending in the $10 range average that premium smoke goes for here in the U.S. but for something I would like to smoke everyday, I'd rather not spend that 50% higher price for the Cappy if there is something as tasty. Lots of new blends to try and I am interested to see some mentioning 10 Till Midnight! I love the blend. I have a massive stash of that one already. Incredible how oily looking the jar is after only having it 4-5 months. haha I smoked it recently while my friends were over and made the comment that I could eat a cake of it like a no-bake cookie and he said the room note was that of an old, wet, mildewing camp. Then he went back to his blueberry steam in his Vape-Pen... Thanks a lot, guys. Excited for my next bout of TAD. Cheers, Justin

After chasing blends and matches I gave up. My Moto is if you like a blend that's available just go for it!

Yeah, you'll need to buy Capstan blue because it's somehow pressed and lightly fermented and it tastes nothing at all like Sutliff Virginia Slices. The only similarity in the two are they are both flakes. No offense meant to Lestrout of course, but if you buy those thinking it's going to be like Capstan you'll be sorely let down. PM me your address if you want some of the Virginia slices. It's a sweet cased low noted old belt VA flake that is good on it's own but will not have that bright tang of Capstan Blue in the slightest.

There's not a close substitute for Capstan Blue in bulk. Have you tried Full Virginia Flake? It's not the same as CB either, but you may find it to your liking.

As long as we're enabling, LOL, how about some John Aylesbury Luxury Flake? OH! ... what about Reiner's Long Golden Flake? These two are TOP notch Golden Va blends!
