So, how do you prefer to cut your cigar before you light up? Do you use a guilotine, hole puncher, v-cutter, pick axe, steam shovel, your teeth or your granny's dentures?

I don't have the finger strength to use a guillotine, so the ladies at JR said they would cut or punch every cigar I buy from them. I love that place.

Depends on the shape. Some I guillotine cut, some hole poke, some "v" cut.

Guillotine - until I read an article in which old José Padron was scoffing at concept of cigar cutters, and said he's used his teeth his whole life. They work pretty well, too! My teeth, I mean - not his.

An 8penny or 10D nail. Or bite the tip off.

I prefer the hole punch but I have used the pick on a pipe tool (works pretty well).

It all depends. I have found that each cut changes the flavor of a cigar quite a bit. Guillotine allows more broad flavors, while the V and hole are typically more focused. This is all subjective of course. With that in mind, I will usually use a hole punch on lighter bodied cigars and guillotine on more medium of full bodied so I get ALL the flavor nuances. JimInks, I tried a shovel once... but ended up with 2 short cigars for the price of 1.

This is what I use. Best $50.00 I've spent for my cigars.

Being as I learned the art and tradition of cigar smoking from a retired Marine General, of course I use my teeth. The exception to this is if I'm smokin a figurado or a torpedo. Despite the fact that I use my teeth 95% of the time I still seem to have accumulated a couple of dozen guillotines and punches over the year. Was over at a buddies house one weekend, grillin steaks, drinkin fosters and smokin a couple of Opus X's. Chris saw me bite the end off of my stogie and was almost incredulous. Couldn't believe that I'd just bite the end off of such a fine smoke. After turning his house upside down, looking for his only guillotine, he finally concluded that he'd left it at his office and walked out onto the deck with a pair of kitchen shears. When he finished butcherin that finely crafted Dominican Republican work of art it reminded me of what the end of Elmer Fudd's shotgun looked like when it blew up in his face. Chris ended up turning the cigar around and lit the butchered end and smoked from the Wrong end. Trying to salvage any dignity he might have had remaining, as I was enjoying my cigar right way round, he exclaimed that it actually tasted better smoking it his way.

Guillotine for store bought cigars since I always prefer the open draw.
I roll my own cigars such that they usually need no cutting at all ... skip all that triple cap work! LOL
