Very interesting article I came across. Here is a little clip and the link to the full article. This isn't a new concept, but it's always nice to see the discussion published out on the web. So... what are your thoughts? Does the relaxation factor of pipe smoking contribute to this theory as well?

Yo Jus
Thanks for that refresher. The data is laid out very well. But I assume oral and throat cancers and problems are probably higher for piping. I don't know how chaw and snuff would compare.
As for the relaxation component, piping is cheaper than therapy.

Let's face it, most of what we do that makes us happy is not good for us. However, the happiness quotient outweighs the risks for me. A small dose of moderation would be good for me but it's not in the cards. Pedal to the metal, boys.

Most definitely ... relaxation and routine combined. Both have their merits separately and are compounded when combined.

When done in moderation, I believe that the stress relieving benefits of pipe smoking far outweigh any negative health effects. I have come to believe that stress is far more dangerous than the doctors realize, or admit to the public anyway.

Phil is right. Stress will kill. Loss of sleep, appetite, and nerves on edge. Kind of like waiting at the mailbox for one's PAD. There is no shortage of meds that doctors are quick to prescribe for this condition. Seems to me that a pipe and tin have more immediate effects and you can safely operate heavy machinery afterwards.

The research and data cited here is very old and not well supported. In fact, there has been very little research done on the health effects of pipe smoking. In the research that has been carried out (that I've seen) the data is polluted by the inclusion of former cigarette smokers. As a result, we are about to see the FDA assume the role of regulating tobacco use with almost no scientific research to support their actions. Why isn't there more research? I suspect that it because the anti-smoking zealots (including the FDA) are afraid of what they might find in a properly conducted study of pipe smoking. Imagine funding and publicizing a large scale, well-constructed study, only to have it show that moderate pipe smoking isn't hazardous to ones health.

Good observations, Dan. I can't even imagine who would be willing to do a study like that at this point. Enough anti smoking sentiment out there to truly poison any sort of study that would be conducted.

Having visited a few old age homes, where people who have outlived their brains stay in "sleep units," there might be something to be said for dying slightly younger than the ultimate, absolute limit that technology affords. Grim thought but light 'em if you got 'em.
