An old classic I had to try and wanted to like. The tin (pouch) note of the cherry flavoring reminded me of being a kid and the smell of the old style cherry cough drops. Unfortunately it doesn't taste like the cough drops did. I get some of the cherry flavor, but not a lot. I do however get a harsh chemical taste, very unpleasant. The tobacco appears to be a low grade burley. With very little nicotine. This will bite and bite hard if not careful. It lights ok, but appears to burns hot, no matter what pipe or cadence, which I attribute to the Cherry topping. Room note is very pleasant I've been told, and only wished it tasted as good as the note it leaves behind. For an OTC blend it's on the bottom for me. The burley is just ok, pretty forgettable actually compared to other OTC burleys much are better in taste to me. I know some folks love this blend, be it from days gone by with dad or gramps or the first baccy they smoked. I enjoy some aromatic tobaccos, but this is not one of them. I think every tobacco is worth trying but this one falls into the "I tried it, I'm good" category with no cellaring plans.

That was one of first blends I smoked when I started 47 years ago. My impression was the same as yours; once and done.

Never one of my favorites and I agree with your review. The ladies liked the room note. I much preferred Sugar Barrel. Another good review Danno

Yo danno
Enjoyed your review. I think MC is gone. Funny that the stuff was made right here in SE PA, and maybe was once in downtown Philly. Papi says John Middleton is/was the richest man in PA. Must have sold a lot of MC. It was one of the first I puffed when I started pipes in college. Never bought the 2nd pouch, and I may have had more than one bowl.

Way to "take one for the team", Dan. Even the thought of it makes me cringe!
Hopefully, this experiment changed your mind! LOL

I think what happened is that Middleton shuttered the place and sold out to Altria...probably why there was the confusion. Sold out in 2007, closed a plant this year... www.bizjournals.com/philadelphia/news/2017/07/06/altria-limeric-black-and-mild-cigar-plant-layoffs.html

Yo trai - now what you said makes a heap of sense. Funny thing, I guess the longtime MC puffers must not frequent the forums - I don't hear the outraged cries complaining about the new blender sullying the blend. LOL

Tried to smoke this blend in the 70's. All I can say now about it is, it was a smoke.

It is no longer available in the tub and is now sold by the pouch. The West Virginia smokeshop stocks it on a regular basis.

You can sure Bookem, Danno! MC and MApple were a few of the only other choices that I tried in the days before Tinder Box. I could taste the cherry with the bite. As to the Apple, I never really tasted it. I opened up a pouch I bought while on my Drugstore Cowboy Runs and I sniffed around enough to actually "get" the apple. It was more of a baked apple essence. Not sure how it will smoke, though. Regardless, thanks for (as said) taking one for the team.

I tried it back in the 70's and wasn't impressed with it. I may have a pouch of it in my cellar that I got in a lot of pipe stuff along the way. Although it has been many years, I still remember it as being a very mediocre blend at best. Haven't tried it since then.

You've outlined an identical description of my experience with this blend and given the reason why I've kept away from it for 50 years. Just try drinking a soda pop right after smoking some of this. That sensory memory just won't fade, even after all these years.

I smoke it daily and have for many years, it's my favorite blend from Middleton's and I do miss not being able to buy it by the tub. Have any of you tried it in a small cob like the Eaton or Pony Express? That's the combination that worked best for me, briars and larger cobs not so much.
