Problem: My jar purchasing has driven up the cost of Mason Jars. Jarring and labeling also takes up space and time. I am loathe to throw away tins. I know that the tins with pop or pop and unscrew are not airtight and that jarring is appropriate. What about the tins (like C&D) with plastic lids? I would think they would be close to airtight and fine if I were planning to smoke the blend regularly. For longer term, wouldn't some wax paper in between the tin and lid be airtight?

I haven't used any of the plastic lid tins for long term storage, but they work great for storing a regular smoke. On some that I don't smoke as often, I keep the bulk tobacco in the bag that it came in & then store it in the tin. It's worked okay for me with several blends. YMMV
I don't know about wax paper, but I have thought about putting plastic cling wrap over the top before putting the lid on.

They tend to keep pretty decent moisture for about a year in the open tins.

I make sure that I "burp" the lid when I replace it. Seems to work for me.

I've had a tin of Rattray's Hal O' the Wynd open now for several months in hopes of it drying out a bit. Well, it has finally but, is still very pliable with just the right moisture level. If it had been any other plastic lidded tin I think it would have been dust dry by now.
Oh! and by the way, it still hasn't improved the flavor, reckon it's just not to my taste.

I know that if you leave the plastic on the rim of a plastic tub that it has no problems storing for a good long while.

Don't throw that pop top away, lay it over the top of tobacco to help hold in the moisture. The Carter Hall plastic tubs work really well and can hold a couple of open tins.

After having a tin of London Dock go crispy on me after a few weeks, I put all open tins, regardless of shape and top in a mason jar now. A lot of factors however, was the baccy dry or moist when opened, how/where is it stored, type of baccy, how often are you opening it up etc...
