To those of you new to the pipe smoking community, this probably won't mean too much. For the older veteran pipe smokers, this may hit home. I was always a fan of Wally Frank pipes. I used to get their catalogs religiously. This hit home with me when I saw it! Apparently, a customer had ordered a pipe which Wally Frank Ltd. was unable to fulfill. This was due to the shortage of imported briar during WW II. They sent the customer a letter, and a substitute pipe, of which they offered a return, credit, or exchange. A great piece in the puzzle of pipe history!

Nice original post. Don't know if the automatic pipe substitution was a courtesy or aggressive marketing though.

Very neat. I was a customer at their store in Paramus, NJ when I was in college.

Nice original post. Don't know if the automatic pipe substitution was a courtesy or aggressive marketing though. In 1941, I believe it was truly a courtesy.

Many American pipe makers turned to Mountain Laurel because of the war.

Great Customer Service. Glad to see it survived all these years. PaPipe (John) I wonder how those pipes smoked?

That is pretty cool!
I only have one Wally Frank pipe, it is a briar pot that rarely gets smoked because it always gave a hot smoke... maybe my abilities or lack thereof contributed to that in the past, I will have to search it out and give it another try.

A great piece in the puzzle of pipe history! That literally is my friend Anthony's, I think he even took the photo unless you are Anthony Cook. lol. It's great. He's a huge Wally Frank collector. Such excellent customer service. See this : pipesmokerunlimited.com/showthread.php?9806-A-Wally-Frank-Apology&highlight=wally+frankYou may not be able to see the whole thread without joining, but that's part of a larger Wally Frank set of collection he picked up.
