No, no, no... I'm not looking to quit smoking a pipe, but I wouldn't mind kicking the coffin nail habit that has plagued me for years. Aside from being a disgusting habit, I know I'm not doing myself any favors in regard to my health. So, while talking to my doctor yesterday, she recommended Chantix. I've read everything there is to read about it, and I'm aware of the potential side effect, but I'm really curious about personal accounts if anyone has used it.
Thoughts and feedback are appreciated.

I tried to use it once and it made me feel drugged and overly aggressive to put it lightly. I smoked cigarettes for 40 years, Camel non-filters and while smoking a pipe just quit and never looked back........well, I looked back but, never smoked one again.

I know we're all different, but after smoking cigarettes for nearly a decade I just quit and took up pipes. I don't know that Chantix will get you to quit cigs and not effect piping, and also don't know how much it really helps you quit if you continue to smoke pipes, you may continue to also want cigarettes.

I smoked nails for 18 years, and used the second smoking cessation medicine and the patches to quit. I cant remember the name of the medicine, but chantix made me very aggressive at the drop of a hat. I've been nail free for two years this month. I'll never smoke another. It really boiled down to a want, I wanted to quit I jist had to get over the physical addiction. The patches helped with the nic freak outs. I was a pack and a half a day so glad to be done with that.

I have tried Wellbutrin and Chantix didn't work for me. Didn't much care for either drug side effects included weird dreams and a aggressive nature. As a lifelong smoker the only thing I have ever managed to do is cut down. Pick up some wood dowels about the same dia as a cigarette, cinnamon tooth picks and a five pound bag of hard candy. Get a little spiral notebook and keep track of when you smoke and what the trigger was. After you can see a pattern you can start to cut back maybe even quit. Put your cigarettes out of reach. In the car you can put them in the spare tire wheel well. At home put them on top of fridge. Some people just go cold turkey and claim it is the best way to go. Good Luck.

My wife took half the dosage for a short time ... she can't stand ANY tobacco anymore so be careful! I really recommend you try some snuff if you haven't already. There are numerous folks that have used it to quit smoking ... Toque even has a blend called "Quit". It can be used quickly and discretely in places where smoking is not allowed. If you are interested, I'd be happy to send you a few to try, just LMK.

I don't have any experience with chantix. But I've known two long term smokers who quit using a combo of the patch and those cinnamon toothpicks that Psycholime mentioned.

Well, this may be a bit controversial; however, I'd recommend a cob and filter, inhale a few puffs when you must and ween yourself from the practice as best you can. I smoked a lot of Marlboro Reds for many years. It worked for me, can't stand the smell of the cigs anymore and could never see myself smoking another.
No matter what you decide, best of luck Justin.

What did you decide, Justin?

Darin, I still haven't made a decision. I can't do the Chantix for at least another week if I'm going to try it. By then, I may build up the willpower to go without it. I will certainly keep you guys updated though. Thanks for asking.

I've heard too many horror stories about Chantix messing with your mind. I have a similar brother experience as crapgame. He took it & stopped smoking, but it changed his personality. He was a jerk before he started taking it as well, but it made him so much worse. He couldn't stand the smell of smoke & made sure that everyone knew his stand on smoking. He has gotten better at being less of a jerk, but he's still not the same person he was before taking it.

When you take a stimulant drug all day everyday for years, decades, you really become accustomed to that fixation. Should tell him to take up some snuff or pipes or both. I'd go with mind over matter. Cigarettes are disgusting. They're the shittiest quality tobacco and mostly repeatedly reconstituted stems. You don't want to constantly inhale the coumarin and fire retardants in them. They smell like burning fabrics at times but mostly like burning paper. Just smoke 20 pipes a day. 😀

My experience with quitting has been that it's not the nicotine I have an issue with. In the past, I have managed that by substituting with gum and also increasing my pipe smoking to satisfy the craving.
The larger issue for me is the associations, which is my concern with something like Chantix. Great, it kills the desire for nicotine, but it's not going to address the things I connect cigarettes with. That I have to do on my own.
I'm not saying nicotine isn't addictive, but getting into the mindset is just as important.

I'm not saying nicotine isn't addictive, but getting into the mindset is just as important. I quit cigarettes gradually, I stopped buying them by the pack & started with making my own, that way I could control how many I had available to smoke. I moved towards substituting a pipe for associations like after dinner smokes, driving & stress induced triggers. Five Brothers in a cob helped a lot & still works today. Everyone has there own way of getting past the cigs, the mental associations are the hardest to get past. If you can find a substitute that works for you, then you're 1 step closer. I knew people who would walk around with a pen in their hand like a cig, just to have something in their hand to cut the associative ties. I hope you find something that works for you, there are ways to do it, it just takes finding what works for you.

I personally wouldn't go near any drug that sounds like it changes your damn personality.

That name sounds familiar. Did they use it for itching private parts in the 80's?

sparks - maybe vaping would get you past the non-nicotine issues connected to cigarettes. There's paraphernalia and ritual involved, and the natural tobacco ones reported taste very much like cigs.

Yeah, I think if I tried hard enough though, I could replace the associations with a pipe just as easily as a vaper. Heard too many bad things about Vaping as well, I would prefer to stay away from another addiction, lol.

I take Wellbutrin, for depression, and would really suggest to any guy that doesn't have to take it, to avoid it. There are certain side effects that can occur which both the taker and his significant other would be displeased with.
I am not talking about attitude problems. The ones I am referring to take place south of the waistband.
