As some of you know from other forums, I am handicapped and am in a power wheelchair. I also have well controlled type 2 diabetes. Due to the diabetes though, I have a pedicure once a month as Miss Daisy is afraid to trim my nails. All of the salons I have gone to, and believe me, there is one in every strip mall, I must transfer to their chair in order to get a pedicure.
A coworker told me about a salon she has been using for a couple of years that have a station on wheels that allows me to sit safely in my chair and get my nails trimmed. I was very excited about that, so Miss Daisy and I went for pedicures today.
The place was very clean, there were plenty of staff, and everyone was extremely friendly. I thought to myself, as I was sitting there soaking my feet, that this option was so much safer for me, and I knew I had found a place that would get all of my future business.
After Miss Daisy and I were finished with our pedicures, we were ready to pay. The bill was $28.00 for her, $40.00 for me. I asked why she charged more for me and her reply was because they had to bring the tub of water to me since I stayed in my chair. I paid her the money, told her what a great pedicure I got, how nice the attendant was, but that I would never be back again.
Is that taking advantage of the handicapped or what?
Rant over!

Doesn't sound like it should cost $12 more to bring the tub to you, Art ...

Medicare will pay for a podiatrist home visit if you have diabetes. I have MDs come here as well.

I think I would have told them I wasn't paying the extra and called a cop. That's not only thievery, it's disgraceful.

What rdpipes said. That kind of thing makes e sick and it truly is a form of discrimination. At the very least, inform the manager.

Must of been Perrier or Avian. . - Kudos for the gentlemanly response to an aggravating situation. PS: I would consider filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

Art, the one group to make aware of this practice is the AWD( Americans With Disabilities). Let them know they will check the business out.

That's a bunch of BS!
They should disclose that they charge extra for that & made it perfectly clear before they started.

That's quite a disheartening story. I agree with everyone else that at the very least they should have informed you of the extra charge before they started. It's far from accommodating if you get charged extra for the accommodation.

That is not right. I'd call and ask to speak with a manager and tell them what happened. Maybe they just made that up.

That blows! If a person "needs" must have, anything to treat health, it should be provided at a lesser amount than those doing it for vanity. If you're getting it done monthly, their work is minimal and should be half price IMHO.

Luckily they no longer make that chair. Did you mean M51 ? Six sets of motors??? Wow. I am sitting in a Pronto M61 typing this. A friend got it for me free, and I had to put a set of batteries in it, and a controller keypad, so I have $250.00 in it.

Penzaholic, yes I meant 51. I am in the process of getting a Permobil paid by Medicare. While the motors have been under warranty, Medicare is tired of paying the labor fees. God luck with the M61.

Well, to continue the story, I have placed a call to the manager who has not returned my call. I did report the incident today with the ADA.
