I just read a post on another forum. Some fella is selling his tobacco. He says that for health reasons he has to quit smoking his pipes. It always makes me sad to read about some one who has to give up the pipe.I've been smoking for so long it's part of my every day life.I worked in a large factory. It was a mile long and a mile deep.My job took me everywhere.I had a small golf cart I used to get around. To folks who didn't know my name I was the guy who rides that little golf cart and smokes a pipe.I guess pipe smoking is part of my nature.I know that as some folks get old they run into breathing problems and can't smoke anymore. So far it hasn't happened to me.I sure hope it doesn't. I don't want to give up my pipe until they hang that tag on my on my toe.I'm sad when I read that someone else has to.

It is sad, , and I hope anyone facing that dilemma fairs well. I've also known guys who rushed to sell their pipes and cellars only to find out that they could return to pipe smoking once their condition improved. My advice to anyone facing something like this is to sit pat on your stuff and wait to see if anything changes before getting rid of anything.

I'm with you @ , I've been smoking for over 35 years and just like I can't imagine a day without my wife,I can't fathom a day without a smoke. Now there was a prolonged period in which my wife and I were seperated physicaly and I was without smokes. But we freaked out a lot of folks who laid eyes on both of us and found we were doing the same thing, talking about the same program or book at the same time.We were in wally world digging in the discount movies, when we turned to each other both holding the same movie. My son quit trying to play against the other at that time.Wendy and I are too close a sync. When traveling we don't have to ask the other to light a smoke, whoever is driving just has to reach out and take the nail the passenger is holding up.A little different when I want a pipe though. I pull off the road and Wendy takes the wheel, and I will light up a nice Aro that makes her hungry.

Yeah, that is a bummer, good advice from John...I saw that happen once also. cigars might fill the void... I knew a guy that had a misdiagnosis, thought he was going to die so he maxxed out his credit cards...Royal Viking cruise, all over Europe, etc... Not long after he did all that he became a blues singer. Last I heard he went to file bankruptcy, but the pissed off wife told the judge why he ran up the cards...didn't fare well for him.

The night before my knee replacement surgery I made a quick list for my wife of what to do with my pipes and tobacco if something happened (Yes Charlie, you got the Mixture 79). Couldn't you just save everything to look at and then do something similar for when the time came. Like John said, maybe things will improve. I figure this way my wife has a nice little money pile that isn't accounted for. (shrug) Plus, this way, I can scan the obits for photos with pipes (Inset dry, raspy, hissing, Vulture sound)

These threads are a good reminder to me to keep my pipe-smoking at the hobby level. I seriously doubt a few bowls a week ever harmed anybody. trailboss - wow, what a story! Poor guy. That's another good lesson - always get a second opinion when you're diagnosed with something terminal!

It's specifically stipulated in my will that my pipes are to be sold upon my death and the proceeds donated to the local Humane Society.
I hope it happens. If not, I'll be back.

I really don't understand the issue myself. Pipe smoking doesn't seem to be an issue for me, health wise. I don't inhale the smoke unless I make a mistake, then I choke... LOL. Sure seems that some doc says 'don't smoke' and panic ensues. I will continue to smoke (what little I smoke) for enjoyment as long as I can make the lighter/match work I guess. Sorry for those who 'have to' quit.
Yes, this is a hobby to me. At this point, the collecting, fixing and playing with tobacciana (sp?) are a LOT of fun to me.

Not to gross or freak anybody out, but my dad quit when his doctor told him that his gums and palate were cured like a ham from constant smoking. And I do mean constant - a pipe all day every day, with a cigar or two to break it up.
