This is Gert's rope, I named it that in honor of my dog Gertie who died two weeks ago. Gert was paralyzed and had no use of her front legs, her back legs she could use somewhat and in a doggie wheelchair could move around the house with encouragment. When she wanted my attention she would come up to me yip and start nudging me with her nose. Gert used to sit with me at odd hours during the night when I was hurting and could not sleep, we would sit outside and I would smoke my pipe and drink decaf coffee or tea while she sat on my lap. One night she was sitting with me while I was trying to come up with a blend to twist into a rope. She was on my lap and I would hold up different leaf in each hand and when she would nudge a hand that is what I would use in the rope. I would then hold up that leaf in one hand and nothing in the other and if she nudged the leaf I added another to the blend and if she nudged the empty hand I was done using that tobacco. After she was finished telling me what tobacco to use in the rope,or she got bored nudging my hands, I started rolling and twisting when all of a sudden the rope burst open. Usually when that happened I took the rope and dropped in the ninja blender and "whirred" it for a couple of seconds into a coarse cut tobacco blend. Somehow the twisted mess ended up in a bag labeled 'Light Fire Cured VA" and I found it a few nights ago after I finished a new rope and was checking to see what I had left. Well I used the bag label and placed the mess inside a LFC VA leaf and rolled it then twisted again. This is what it looks like. As far as what is inside the rope all I remember is ..LFC Va...aged burley...flue cured bright leaf...some cigar leaf...and some Old English Curve Cut flakes. This is a very special rope and will be smoked only on special occasions. Below are some pictures of Gert in her wheelchair about two months before she died.

I'm extremely saddened for you precious loss. I know the hurt is indescribable and can only truly be known by you. Take good care and look forward and backwards to happier times.

Sorry to hear about Gertie, Mike ... she was lucky to have you guys and is at peace now. By the time my last fur-kid passed, he couldn't stand up anymore. I like to think of him running, unrestrained, through those woods in the sky.
That's a great rope that she picked out .. cherish and enjoy. Dang ... my eyes seem to be leaking suddenly!

That is quite a touching story...you cannot top what joy a dog brings to our lives, when you get a really good one, no words need to be spoken between master and companion..just a look from either communicates so much...that dog looked like quite the cutie pie.
I am glad that that played a small part in remembrance, just say the word and I will send more off to you, I probably wont smoke what I have left, and I would rather it be used for such a cause.
I still have your address in my pm folder.

Man’s Best Friend
"Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has he may lose. It flies away from him perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stones of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous, is his dog.
"Gentlemen of the jury, a man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fierce, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer; he will lick the wounds and sores that come from encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wing and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.
"If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of his company to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in his embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death."
Quite a backstory on this..... www.psychologytoday.com/blog/canine-corner/200910/man-s-best-friend-the-senator-the-dog-and-the-trial

My condolences, I know how hard it is to lose a close furry family member.
I'm sure Gertie will be looking down, wagging her tail happily every time you smoke that rope.

Crapgame, I totally feel what you feel. We had a fifteen year old doggie, about the size of Gert, who was all stroked out. We decided to let him die at home, as he was in no pain. Several days later he took some water. Then we eyedroppered milk and some protein. His back legs were worthless. He became blind and deaf earlier. Yet he clung to Xuan. Barked when he was hungry. Xuan made a sling so he could stand up to eat. He still managed to sneak around when our back was turned. He lived for another year and died peacefully. Naming something that looks like a... uh... after a doggie? It looks like the plastic piece of... uh... something I bought from a Johnson Smith Catalog when I was a kid and put on dad's breakfast plate.

Whether on a pipe forum, or shaving coins of Brown Bogie at work, comments by non smokers, I get the same reaction.

I still have your address in my pm folder.Charlie, She was a great dog and was was such a cutie. She had me wrapped around her little nose near the end. One of her favorite things to do was chase ground moles around the yard at night, she never ate them, just chased them and used her nose to toss them into the air or she would take her front paw and kinda "poke/step" on it. One night we were sitting outside under the trumpeter bush ,her favorite place to sit, when she saw a mole crossing the sidewalk three feet to our right. Her back legs started going and she starting nudging and poking me like mad and me being wrapped around her little doggie nose, I cradled her in my arms and chased this damned mole around the yard. Picture if you can a rather large guy with on his knees, a dog cradled in his arms and crawling on knees and elbows after this damned mole so Gertie could try and toss it into the air with her nose. This went on for about 15 minutes until the mole managed to go into the neighbors yard. That stunt caused me two days of serious back and leg pain but looking back, I would do it again and probably wake up a kid or two to help with the chasing. Ah the things we do for out dogs.

I believe it was Immanuel Kant who said, "You can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals". You're good people, Mike ... and that's a great visual of you in the yard!

So sorry to hear about Gert. Losing a pet you're close to is like losing a family member. Love the idea of a tobacco named in memory of her. Might have to come up with a blend for our little dog Booger that we lost a couple of years ago, but not sure how smoking a blend called Booger would have a lot appeal though. lol
