Most of you know I have Mast Cell Activation Disorder, which is a genetic immune system disorder. Basically, every so often my immune system tries to kill me, so during an episode, I'm down for 4-12 days or so and can't work. I got fired from my IT job because I wasn't calling in when I got sick. They didn't understand you are incapicitated; you can't speak or dial a phone - you're down. I've been out of work for like, five years now and it's miserable. No income at all; I have to rely on other people to bring me food. Well, did you see my post the other day about the sweet lady that gave me a ride (my car's currently dead)? She gave me her card and said if I ever needed anything, to call her. We emailed back and forth a few times, and earlier today she offered me a job! It's perfect for my situation. She is a real estate agent and wants help maintaining and managing all her websites, Facebookies and Tweety things. She sent me all her logons and I started today. I work from home and can set my own hours. I input house information for specific houses, try and improve her main website (she said don't ask, just go for it) and basically try to make her marketing improve, so she can sell more houses. She's going to pay me 10% of her commission when something closes. Her most common sale price is $300,000, on which I would get $852. Currently she's selling two to four houses a month. About half of what I used to make, but hey, totally workable for a single guy, and the work from home thing is awesome. Look out, Pipes & Cigars! I told you guys she was sweet

She had me log on to her computer and tried to show me some things, but she was all over the place and way too fast for me to get anything she was saying. She says she has bad ADD, and yes, you do. She works seven days a week and holidays, and I told her one of my goals was to stop that. Here is the awesome email she just sent me. This chick's shaping up to be one of the best bosses ever.
I take days off occasionally. You work when you want to, the results will happen. No worries!
Monday I will make a list of tasks that I need for you to do on a daily (Mon thru Fri) and weekly basis, as well has how to actually do it. That will also help me to stay focused when you come over.
I can't make money if I am doing a gazillion things and that is where you will come in. I need to write letters, make calls, take on new listings, etc.
I don't have time to apply ample time to Facebook, my websites...basically getting my business front and center online.
Don't worry about this BS today. Enjoy your weekend. I'm going to get us some new clients today....fingers crossed.

If I get to work from home (only!), for a chick as awesome as this one, I don't think I'd take double the salary to work for a normal company, with it's office politics and people you don't like! Hey, just realized I get to smoke at my desk! I am one lucky bastard

This is some great news, David. Turned out to be very lucky that you ran into eachother the other day. Best of luck, that can be a good partnership. Just be careful.

Don't worry, I've switched from friend mode to professional mode with her; definitely don't call her a chick! When she picked me up on the side of the road, I was unshaven and wearing stretchy pants; when I go to her home office next week, I'll be in slacks with a sport coat and tie

That is awesome news, congratulations! Considering the way this opportunity evolved, you might not go the route that I recommend for employment elsewhere, but in light of:
If, down the road you land (for lack of a better word) a conventional job where you punch a clock, 9-5 etc....make sure you avail yourself of FMLA, the condition that you are afflicted with, would certainly be covered.

Thanks everyone! I looked up FMLA, and the company has to have at least 50 employees; that could be an issue, I've never worked for a company that big. This job could not be better suited for me - working at home, by myself, no office politics, smoking at my desk, it's IT work, awesome boss, setting my own hours, enough money to live on if I stay single, just me and the machines. It's perfect. Amy does the people stuff, I do the machine stuff. Amy doesn't care how or when I do things, it's totally results based. One other thing that's cool is, every time the boss gets a raise, I do too. Normally you're making your $45K or whatever, and the boss is getting richer, you're staying at $45, and you have to go in and beg for a raise. Not so with this. I bet you anything the duties she comes up with won't take me 40 hours; the rest of the time I can spend trying to come up with new ways to make her online presence bigger. How many people can say they can sit at their desk doing stuff they love at 11pm in their pajamas with a pipe and a beer? Didn't have to interview or provide a single reference; I was walking down the damn street. Dave very happy. Haven't been happy in a long time

Congratulations brutha.
Having been a Manager/Leader of People, Processes and Businesses for 30+ years now I would humbly offer the following advice.
1. Get a copy of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey and read it. 2. Learn her business as soon as you possibly can. 3. Be Pro-active vs reactive. Anticipate her businesses needs and provide solutions.
The sooner you can put yourself in the position of being a "Strategic Partner" vs being an "employee", the better.
Good luck!

I haven't read the Covey book, but regarding 2 and 3...
I've done this before, don't worry, I know how to do this. At the beginning of a project, you have to be all in learning about her and the business. Sunday I worked 17 hours, from 2:30AM till 10:30PM that night, and was back at it at 6:30AM on Labor Day. You have to learn as much as you can, as fast as you can. Check.
As for proactive vs reactive, here's my goals, which I've already told her. Immediately, learn as much as I can as fast as I can. My short-term goal is to get to the point where I'm doing everything she wants where she doesn't have to worry about it; yeah, Dave's got that. If I only do everything she wants though, I have failed. That's when my real job begins. My real job is to add Dave stuff that she didn't think of, and be the partner (I say teemie) to which you referred.
I already have her saying, I got US two new clients, and WE will get such and such. I'm already not an employee, but a teemie. She called me this morning as she was getting ready to go show a house and we talked for an hour and eighteen minutes (magicjack times your calls), and we had a blast.
She's one of my favorite people I have ever met, a little bundle of positivity and energy. This is going to be the best job ever!
